Analyzing the Game

We beat a solid team in Week 1 in a game that wasn't all that competitive.  We were up 16-0 and the Cowboys at the end of the day would have needed a TD + 2 Point Conv to even tie it.

Newton looked crisp.  Offensive line held up until Williams got hurt.  Defense was sensational as per usual.  IMO my biggest gripe was our red zone offense.  We need to find a way to be more effective down there beyond "run Cam".

Didn't really touch on Cam Newton much. I think I'd say he didn't have his best game (as a passer anyway) but it was far from his worst game either.

Some good moments, a fair number of passes that were a little bit off, but he seemed to embrace the things that Turner has been trying to teach him. and clearly he's still effective as a runner.

Overall a good enough performance to win, and that's what matters most.

I was impressed with Cam's game management today.  It was stated that the Cowboys' secondary coverage was quite solid.  They get paid, too, and they have a good D, explaining the low scoring game (compare to Bucs/N.O., where neither has a clue how to defend a pass)  Many of tonight's posts have been knee-jerk reactions to that low score as indicating we have "no offense," but wait until we play a team with a weaker pass rush, and a more vulnerable secondary, then you'll see a points explosion from us.

Cam has matured to the point that he doesn't force throws into impossibly tight windows, hence NO INT'S !!  He took what they gave him.  There were several NFL games today with 400+ PYs, but they weren't against a D as good as Dallas.

This was a quality win.  We should relish it.  Even with that poor lost soul, Munnerlyn out there chasing after Beasley, we have just witnessed one of the very Top D's in the league.

I don't really get why some folks are saying the offense looked no different than before.  I definitely saw differences.

Now any new system (even if it's just a different coach running a similar system) requires adjustment.  Even something as simple as one guy saying "go route", another saying "fly route" and another saying "9 route", you have to get used to that.  And because football moves really fast, you have to be able to process it quickly.

And we have people saying we almost lost the game at the end. What math are they using?

in the first real look at norv turner's offensive approach for cam, it seems like he's really simplified things for him. it seems like a lot of the passing plays were designed to get the ball out of his hands as quickly as possible. cam was cycling through his progressions much quicker than normal and didn't try to extend too many designed pass plays with his feet. we might see fewer chunk plays, but more consistent drives with these short and quick routes. cam has always felt more comfortable in a high pace but simple playbook. he wants everything to be fast and as instinctive as possible for cam. one complaint is that norv is going to have to get comfortable with the idea of taking some downfield shots. you can't let a guy with cam's long range accuracy dip and dunk 25 times a game.

I still had the feeling they took their foot off the gas.  Had plenty of time right before half to take a shot at the end zone but instead just wasted a few seconds and settled for the FG.  Again at the end with cowboys holding 3 timeots and the 2 min warning we went conservative and gave them the ball back.

Yep! I had a couple of Shula flashbacks, there and towards the end of the game. I'm going to put it off on being the first game though. There were also a few times that they got penetration and stuffed C-Mac where I thought we should have called a screen.

I was jealous watching Tampa Bay against NO and how aggressive they were. Even when they were up on the Saints heavily they stayed aggressive on offense—

they were sending passes downtown all over the place to Evans and Jackson,.

i hope we get there.

Part of that is knowing they couldn't stop the Saints. They knew they had to score about 50 to win and they had nothing to lose. I'm not defending Ron's conservative calls, hell, I assumed Norv would loosen that up a bit, but when you have a top 5 defense, it's much safer to play conservatively on offense with a lead. It's frustrating, but that's football.
