Vikings coach claims official admitted clean hit drew penalty: 'They just want us to throw the flag'

"There has been no shortage of confusion, frustration and outrage as the NFL’s new tackling guidelines continue to lead to questionable penalties, but now it looks like even an NFL official believes clean hits are now receiving flags.

Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer claimed he was told as much during the Vikings’ 29-29 tie against the Packers on Sunday in an interview on KFAN captured by ESPN’s Courtney Cronin on Wednesday.

NFL official reportedly admits Vikings penalized for clean hit

After Vikings safety Andrew Sendejo was flagged for unnecessary roughness on a hit he believed was clean, Zimmer said that Sendejo asked an official what he could have done differently. He apparently received a less than satisfactory answer.

“You did everything right. You couldn’t have done anything different,” the official reportedly said. “They just want us to throw the flag.”

The hit in question occurred in the third quarter and involved Sendejo leading with his right shoulder for an open-field tackle of Packers wide receiver Devante Adams, who had made initial contact with Vikings cornerback Xavier Rhodes. Zimmer reportedly called to ask the NFL’s office to review the hit.

Zimmer joins an ever-expanding chorus of football figures bewildered by the NFL’s new directives on defense, a chorus that ironically includes the quarterback of the team that the Vikings were playing on Sunday.

Though it was likely due to a costly penalty on Clay Matthews in Week 1 rather than their game against the Vikings, the Packers’ Aaron Rodgers publicly questioned the new rules on Wednesday, saying the rules “maybe are going the wrong direction” and that some of the hits in question “are not penalties” to him."

 

 

I believe Zimmer the NFL is  trying to take every hard hit out of the game

The NFL is really getting raked over the coals by a lot of analysts for these new rules...and they deserve to be. Even Kirk Cousins admitted the flag on Clay Matthews for hitting him was questionable.

When you're getting doubted by guys who actually benefited from what you did, it's time to ask some questions.

There isn't a ref in the league that would say this or admit this on the field.  And if there was a ref that said this, his/her ass is no longer in the league come start of games this weekend.

The NFL is heading for a slow and steady decline. So many negative things are swirling around right now. The rule changes for player safety taking a lot of the action out of the game, sometimes unnecessarily. The long term health impacts are eventually going to dilute the talent pool as athletes move towards less violent sports. The politics permeating into the game are taking away from what is supposed to be a pure entertainment outlet. It's hard to come back from some of this stuff.

I don't doubt it a bit. There's no attempt at adherence to the letter of the rules. These days if there's a big hit that would've been featured on the "jacked up" segment during SportsCenter years ago, there's going to be a flag more often than not regardless of whether or not the hit was clean.

meh, I don't buy into the NFL heading for a slow and steady decline like it unique or something. 

Life in general is going through these tech jumps, everyone has access to crazy info, everyone can respond in real time and reach almost anyone to a degree with there thoughts about anything window of life....In a nutshell THAT is what the rules and the unhappiness with them stems from. 

I mean yeah, we are witnessing what that does to the NFL.   But the NFL is not actually unique in that regards.  We see it with news, with see it within our communities,  in our schools, we actually see this impacting almost everything to various degrees

In fact, it has gone uphill every, single, year of extistence. And in that time of existence, it has constantly changed and adapted.

Bad publicity is still publicity. No fan of a team just ups and stops watching for any of the current reasons or issues, just doesn’t happen.

I get some are butthurt about whatever is going on and want some sort of repercussions for it but the fact is that all signs point to the NFL continuing to prosper.

Yeah, I can't imagine an analytical finance guy like Tepper getting hoodwinked on a bad investment of $2B+. He's only making that huge of a bet on something that he sees as a sure thing.

Pretty sure the repercussions was Cam Newton taking more hits to the dome without a flag thrown since he spoke out on a ref.  Not exactly what you meant.
