Ron Rivera on drafting Donte Jackson. Gives Marty credit for selling him on a different type of player than usual

Wow your title is very misleading. Rivera was targeting a different type of player and was nervous that he wouldn't fall to us, not nervous about drafting Jackson.

I read it as Rivera was nervous because Hurney refused to move up to get him and Ron was scared someone else would draft him before our pick.

Most of this board hated this pick and wanted Joshua Jackson and that kid from Colorado.

That'd be me.

Hope Jackson pans out, it's still early but I like what I see so far. He's better than I anticipated and that has a lot to do with the fact that he was a Hurney second rounder and that clouded my judgement.

Still think he's a little too slight, I've seen him pushed around on some run plays a few times, but not nearly as much as I thought he would be. He's a great and willing tackler and very physical for a guy his size.

He's still a rookie but so far so good.

That's how the quote reads. The title of this thread makes one think Ron was nervous about Jackson being a different type of player which is not the case at all.

I'll have to rewatch the presser. I interpreted Ron's nervous as hell comments to fearing Donte would be off the board before we picked, thinking Marty should move up and take him, because they had targeted him so heavily and REALLY wanted him.

But I could be wrong.

I misread it. You’re right.

Changed the title for accuracy.

Speak for yourself. I was one of the first to say the kid would be good.

That's super cool man but also not the point I was making.

A lot of people that critique Ron over every thing he does despite most people in the thread hating the pick.

Now we're brerating him for admitting he was nervous about branching off from his normal and taking a chance when a lot of people here were mad we didn't drart one of those two cornere.

Doesn't apply to you, cool my guy, that wasn't directed at you then.

Turns out this was based off a misread anyway so

The draft is one of those times where people are all over the place. I think a week after most were excited about Jackson. The only person I remember trashing him was that Saints fan.

    • Yeah, Fitzgerald was smart to sign with the panthers--not sure how many NFL teams were in the Market....I was surprised to see Morgan re-sign Tuttle and Ray--even if Ray's contract is completely unguaranteed--but with Brown, Wharton, Brown III, Robinson, Cam Jackson--maybe Crumedy--Tuttle could be excellent depth--but at DE, not DT, imo.  Once again, it appears that Morgan may have found UDFAs who have a shot making the team--last year, there were 2 who contributed in a meaningful way.  This year, I see CBs Thornton and Reid with a legitimate shot to make the roster.  I also think LB Nomura has a legit shot (Morgan has to love this guy) as well as LB Bam Martin Smith from USC.  Finally, I think one of the safeties will stick. In all, I expect 1-2 CBs, 1 LB, 1 S, 1 OL, 1 K to make this team. Predictions:   CBs Thornton and Reid make the 53-man roster.  LB Tuasivi Nomura makes the 53-man roster as a ST ace and ILB depth OL Michael Tarquin may make the roster to groom as a potential RT replacement for Moton.  Moton, BC, and Nijman are on expiring contracts.  While I like what I am hearing about Kandra, the OG room is very crowded.  Lewis, Hunt, Zavala, Kingston--but he could compete for the 4th G job. S:  Trevian Thomas, Isaac Gifford are probably the front runners, but Jack Henderson from Minnesota might be able to win a S spot as well.  I expect all three will not make the 53, but the darkhorse name to watch is Henderson. Henderson's Pro day: Minnesota DB Jack Henderson had arguably the BEST overall workout of any Safety in this entire draft: 40yd. 4.47 vertical. 40” Broad. 10’8” Shuttle. 4.15 3cone. 6.70 Bench. 12
    • I’ve said this before, in retrospect I consider 2024 his true rookie year.  When I judge it from that standpoint there’s a lot to be encouraged and excited about. He wasn’t a top 10 QB in that timeframe but he definitely looked like a legitimate starting QB with upside potential. I do expect top 10 numbers this year.
