Is It Time To Gut This Team?

Is this reactionary? Probably so, but I have been thinking about this for a few weeks now.  With so many of our starters most likely retiring or moving on after this season, I feel like this was our last real chance at a Suberbowl.  So should we scrap this team, and if so who is safe?

To me its obvious that Newton, CMC, Luke, Jackson, Moore, Addison and Moton are safe.  Included in this gut would be the coaching staff and the GM, we have a new owner, its time for some new blood in the front office.

I don't know about "time" but with the veterans we have running their final lap and the low number of players we have under contract going into next season, there's a pretty good shot that this team will look a lot different a year from now.

This offseason's overhaul could potentially have a big effect on how this team looks over the next several years. That's why I want more capable hands then Marty Hurney's running the process.

For the past couple of seasons the FO has made the offense a priority, adding more speed and versatility. Now it's clearly time to address the defense, starting with the line.

Gutting the team means starting over with a new core. We won't be doing that as we already have a strong core, especially on offense.

It's time to retool on defense. We have to get it right in FA and Draft. The defense is struggling because guys like Kony Ealy, Daeshon Hall, Vernon Butler, and Daryl Worley did not pan out. Also,  Bradberry and Shaq show flashes but can't bring it all together. Time to move on from Wes Horton, Byron Cox Jr., Mike Adams, Captain Munnerlyn, Peppers, and probably Thomas Davis. The defense needs to get younger and faster. Several guys on the defense already have their second or third contract, I don't see much desire or want to. Detroit had their 4th and 5th string receivers out there, gave up 16 sacks in last 2 games, they should have been held under 14 points.

Wow— some part of me dreams of getting the right coaching staff and doing just that,..

having a Pederson(McVae hasn’t won anything yet) come in and do just that would be incredible.

the problem is you can get a guy that seems great,.. a Chip Kelly(although it could be argued that Pederson won a Super Bowl with the team Chip put together) or a Gruden or a Wilks or a host of others that so far have made our team look like a Super Bowl team.

so is anyone ready to have 3-4 ugly 2-14 type seasons if it goes that way? 2 coaches within 5 years? Cam gets traded in the process?

I wouldn’t say we need to gut the team but we are going to find out quickly (in the next two years) how good Marty Hurney (if retained) is.

These next two drafts are going to dictate the future of the Panthers with so many players retiring or moving on.

Just thinking about it from an elitist perspective, how many players do the Panthers have on their roster that are or have the potential to be elite at their position? Cam, McAffrey, Moore, Samuel, Turner, Moton, Kueckly, Jackson? That’s about it in my opinion.

The Panthers need to draft well over these next two drafts or they are going to have no choice but to blow it up.

    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
