Cam is Quietly Having a Career Year

Recommended Posts

So far we've played 11 games , so 5 games left to play.

Some of Cams stats

  • 359 pass attempts, 250 completions, 69.6% completion percentage
  • 2,699 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns, 7 interceptions
  • 417 rushing yards, 4 rushing touchdowns
  • 26 total touchdowns accounted for (Had 45 total in his MVP year)

Some notable facts

  • Cam is throwing for a career high completion percentage at 69.6% (His next highest was 61.7% in 2013)
  • He's currently 5th in the entire league in completion percentage (Behind only Brees, Ryan, Cousins, Wentz) (and that is with a TON of drops from Funchess mind you).
  • He's currently 7th in the league in passer rating

My thoughts:

  • Hope Cams performance isn't getting lost in how the season is going
  • I'm guessing his completion percentage would be closer to 72 or 73  percent if he didnt have to deal with Funchess' dropsies

Some unrelated thoughts:

  • CMC is tied for 10th in yards per carry, 9th in total rushing yards, tied for 9th in receptions, 4th in the NFL in total yards from scrimmage (With Gurley in 1st place only 119 yards ahead of him)
  • As incredible as Saquon has been doing, McCaffrey stats are rather similar (CMC 4.9 ypc / SB 4.8 ; CMC 757 rushing /SB 829  ; CMC 610 receiving with 71 receptions/SB 581 receiving on 71 receptions)

I did the math earlier, he's not quite on pace for a career year.  2015 is still going to be slightly better if his current pace remains where it is.  However, he has looked better and better as the season has gone on.  What I hope we don't lose sight of is that this level of performance can be much more sustainable over a longer period of time given the way he has accomplished it as opposed to 2015.  Honestly, Cam can probably do this another 5-8 years at the same level given the way he's accomplishing it now.  I'm really excited for the year he's having, even if the defense is letting our team as a whole down.

It isn’t quiet. It’s loud and clear that Cam has returned to MVP form.

the problem is that the combination of Graham Gano, our inept coaching staff, and a defense that is the worst unit I’ve seen since we had Haruki Nakamara in our secondary is wasting another year of Cam Newton.

its a cryin shame

In 15 he had two or three games with 4-5 tds passing later in the season, that’s when his stats really took off. If he has a game like that his stats will be better than 15 (in terms of tds). He is playing his best ball this season. Such a shame our D is a let down.

The defense isn't elite as we're used to but it's average if not slightly above average according to stats.

Rushing defense isn't bad but the passing is below average.

But that's the name of the game in the NFL today. Defense ranking high are typically ones who have not faced decent teams this season, once the Panthers play the Saints I am sure we'll be even worse. The NFL is shifting to an offense oriented game as we all know and thus defenses are going to give up 20-30 points a game. That's just how  it's going to be.

The Panther's coaching staff refuses to adjust to this as evident by being in the bottom 3rd passing but top 3 rushing for yards. Meanwhile, the top 5 or so teams who are contending for the super bowl this year also just so happen to have the best pass yards ratings all around. New Orleans may have a lot of rushing attempts, but breaking down their stats, their success is based on the pass, short quick plays, hurry ups etc.

In essence teams that can chip away and gouge other teams with quick passes and score touchdowns in a VERY short time of possession are winning in the NFL today despite whether their defense holds up or not. They don't rely on field goals, time of possession, clock management, defenses holding up or basically anything that is essential to Rivera's game.

They're always in it because their offense and scheme is built to only need 60-90 seconds to score a touchdown on every possession. Imagine that.

Not in terms of total numbers. But in terms of QB efficiency he's blowing 2015 out of the water with much higher completion percentage.

There's still 5 games left, and we're probably going to go down big in the Saints games. Wouldn't be suprised to see his passing stats come fairly close to 2015 if not quite there (Probably around 30 TDs and 10 INTS while he had 35 TDs in 2015)

There is absolutely NOTHING above average this season about this defense.  Not one thing, not only player.  Even Luke has looked mediocre most all of this year.  The defense is just plain trash. Does anyone here trust them against New Orleans, or any other good offense in the NFC?  Even if we somehow made the playoffs (we wont) we would just get embarrassed again.

This team is losing for two reasons:

#1 (by a large margin) - the defense can't stop the big play and can't create turnovers.

#2 - the offense puts up very nice numbers, but falters in the big moments.

#2 really wouldn't be of any concern if the defense could just make a play once in a blue moon.  The only time the defense makes a big play is when the game is basically already won.  Outside of week 1, they haven't come through in the clutch once all year.

The rankings are for the entire season. The problem is that Shittsburgh Nightmare exposed us and now it's gun-ho every week with the Swamp Surfers coming twice. We will be a bottom 25-32 defense by the end of the season. We have nothing but pass happy teams left to play. Tarmpa, Cleeland, Swamp Surfers, Failcants.

I agree. He has been consistently good since the start of the season. He no longer has those roller coaster type games, where he plays well one week and then struggles the next. It's a testament to his character that he showed a willingness to improve after winning a MVP. Also getting rid of Shula helped tremendously. Next, I want to point out how great of a leader he has been on the field, podium, and off the field. Its unfortunate that the defense has regressed due to age and not built to defend the pass.

Don't kill the messenger, as I sated in that posts I am looking are purely stats and also said the Panther's defense are set up to get worse.

Then I simply try to explain the stats with observation. Doesn't mean there aren't other reasons, as stats are just stats, not explanations.

If only we didn't decide to run the ball every time we get inside the 10. Imagine the possibilities.

    • It all sounds great. The only unknowns are injuries and how they will need to be addressed. Horn has a history as does the newly added Jaelen Phillips and Cooker has yet to play an entire season as well. And then there are the Ikey's - totally unexpecteded injuries that put a major wrench in your plans. I do think its a great plan though.
    • If we pay Bryce like a franchise QB we're completely and utterly buttfuged.
    • In my view, the realistic expectation for this team to compete will start 2027.  At that time, I think we could be looking at the following (this is HIGHLY speculative):   QB:  You know, Bryce.  I am not a fan, but they don't ask me.  But there is reason for hope--and here it is.  Bryce will be entering his prime.  Since we are likely to pay him, there will be changes that I include throughout this exercise--I realistically speculate on what they are going to do with Bryce and then I realistically speculate on what means in terms of the cap and other positions. Bryce HAS IMPROVED.  The idea is that if you give him more weapons and protection, that will continue.  His career:   At this rate, if his growth continues, by 2027 we should expect nearly 30 TDs and about 12 Interceptions and a Rating of about 98.  His completion percentage should settle at 65-66% or so.  If that happens, you can win with it. The following stats demonstrate how the Panthers will be able to afford it (and re-sign Ickey) My guess is they will require about $60m per year. This is why rookies who can play are important.  It also helps us see the blueprint.  You may disagree, but this is the cruel realities of the salary cap. Robert Hunt:  Cut post June 1 and save $19m.  Who do you replace him with?  Ickey. Tershawn Wharton:  Cutting him saves nearly $15m.  We should all hope to see Aaron Hall (UDFA) make the roster and play well.  Regardless, this is a position we would likely have to address in the next draft. Trevin Moehrig:  Cutting Moehrig as the starting SS saves this team $16.5m.   Ransom will be on year 3 of a cheap rookie deal and should be more than ready to take the reins.  their styles are similar.  Furthermore, FS Wheatley (R, 4th round) will be starting. Taylor Moton:  So much depends on his knee, but I have an idea that he can play another 3 years.  extending him could save the team about $5m per year.  Cutting him outright would save the team about $21m. In the most drastic situation, we have to cut Moton and the other three players mentioned.   We would need (in all likelihood) a starting DT and RT.  It is possible that the DE would be addressed, but Wharton's production (so far) could be equaled by a rookie.  Look for a cut free agent and a 2027 draft pick here.  If you cut Moton, you save $21m, and that would be the only big hole to fill.  Having Ickey at RG gives you some depth at T, and Ickey could be the guy.  T could be pick in the 2027 draft (first round), fwiw.  It saves you $21m while costing you $5m, for example. We get younger, creating a core of Freeling, Hecht, and the RT first rounder in 2027) along with Ekownu (second contract in the $15m range, and Lewis, whose contract would be in the $16m range if not extended.)  The OL cuts (Hunt, Moton) would save $40m.  The OL would get younger and still solid with veterans at G.   By cutting Wharton (no brainer if his play stays the same) and Moehrig (good player--but we have Ransom on a rookie contract who would not be that much of a drop off--if any) in addition to Hunt and Moton, we would save over $70m in cap room. We would be able to give Bryce bag  and we would have enough to re-sign Ickey (if the knee is not too risky) to a Guard contract (probably at a discount, coming off that injury).  Furthermore, we could add a RT in the draft (or a RG if Ickey moves to RT) and that would be the only large hole to fill. Correct my logic if you see issues-- On defense, in addition to the aforementioned, Scott ($2m contract) is out, replaced by a 4th round rookie contract. CB Jackson's contract ($7.8m) expires and he is (possibly) replaced by a rookie contract.  At Edge, patrick Jones II's $10m contract expires and he is likely a reserve, and his role is absorbed by Phillips, Scourton, Princely, and possible an UDFA like Isaiah Smith or a 2027 draft pick.   These productive developmental players over the past 2 drafts will pay huge dividends.  On paper, I see the team getting much younger and possibly better while cutting nearly $100m and reallocating that money to get more production.
