Do we have the peices to have a 3-4 defense?

Most the Huddle agrees that we need a new HC next year.  It is a possibility with a new HC/DC and a former Steelers owner, that we might employ a 3-4 defense going forward.  We all know that if we stay in the 4-3 that we will need an edge rushing DE badly in the draft or through FA.  With a 3-4 we might have the peices we need already.  We would have Poe at NT, Short at DE, Butler/Love at DE(this is where we might have to get someone), Shaq and Addison at OLB, and Luke and TD at Middle.  Even if we need someone at that other DE spot, we wouldnt have to spend a 1st on it.  We could focus on OL or DB with that 1st instead.

I’m not sure if I’d use Shaq as OLB. I’d stick him in the middle with Luke or possibly slide him to safety. If anything he is replaceable. Your gonna want some beef on that DL, so there’s potential with the players we have but in the long run we’ll need space eaters. Addison has the size and build to be an OLB in a 3-4, but it’s different techniques than a hand in the dirt DE.

Theres some good players that are free agents next year that we could plug into a new system, but there will definitely be some growing pains with a new scheme.

Have to listen to what Peppers said when talking about the defense - the elements of the defense are not working together. Mostly, he referenced the new guys, but you have to look at Addison and Bradberry for continuing to NOT set the edge and allow runners a clear path. I've seen many occasions in which Addison is too far upfield, only to be undercut by the RB or Bradberry gets sucked into the line, trying to fight off a OLineman when the RB runs right around him. That's not how the scheme is supposed to work.

What's the remedy? Better coaching. All of the problems they are having are fixable through coaching. The fact that the talent is there, but the results aren't just underscores that point.

So, I don't care what the scheme is, although I would favor staying with the 4-3 and just get a decent DC in place to hold everyone accountable and get the parts working together.

Individually, I am not sold on Addison, any of the young DEs, Poe, Thompson or any CB not named Jackson.

There is really no such thing any more,.. it’s just labels that are left over from the past.

there was a great article and interview with Wade Phillips recently asking him about differences in his 3-4 and a 4-3 and he said there really was no difference any more.

there are so many multirole players whereas the past there were single roles,..and it’s required that defenses constantly evolve in the game on the field, personnel on the line, back in coverage etc.

anyway— yes we can play 3-4, 4-3, 5-2 or anything else on any given down.

    • I don’t know about floor in a team defense sense but we needed more.  The floor that I am familiar with is our QBs floor and it is so low that every other part of the team needs to be beefed up.     We tried our best to improve these things and I think we did improve the defense and we at least kept the offense  from sinking from no LT.  And ostensibly helped the receivers too.   So we kept a window open that we at least have a chance to improve our record by a game of two.  Which would probably give us the division.

    • Yeah. I am one of. those who think a JAG RB can eat with really good blocking. (Brooks is most important in my mind, in tbe passing game and that is what we’ll lose without him)  There are a lot of aspects to this. The big one that caused us to struggle is Young and his arm scared no one.  Best back, best blocking still cannot defeat a really good defense if they are not forced to respect the pass.  And teams did not.    But, a strong OL and running game Can get us over against weaker defenses.  And if Bryce still doesn’t scare anyone we can still win some games. Like last year  So it is really important to tend to that OL.   Get that straight and see if in his fourth year he can finally back defenses off. That is what if is all about this year to me, on the Bryce front.
