If You Want A Young Offensive Minded Coach Here He Is - Matt Campbell

Matt Campbell is the current HC at Iowa State.

He has been linked to the Browns HC job, but with their turnaround, they may just end up keeping Williams/Kitchens. The Patriots tried to bring him in as an assistant coach last season. Saban tried to hire him at Alabama. His buyout at Iowa State is $7m. For a small program, that is a pretty significant buyout. It shows you how valuable he is.

He is only 39 years old. His teams are always competitive. In 2017 his team took their backup QB into Oklahoma and shocked the #3 team in the country. His team then beat the #4 TCU Horned Frogs later that month.

His coaching record 53-33. Pretty impressive coaching at programs with no recruiting power and very little financial support.

At the least, he should be brought in for an interview.

Zero NFL experience. He's 19-18 at Iowa State (though he's 8-5 and 8-4 in his last two seasons). If I was a mid-level P5 college program I might be interested. Not a chance I'd hire this guy as an NFL HC right now.

i don't really care about the whole "no nfl experience" thing, but I do care about the whole "how in the world do you assemble a staff?"

players or kids sons can theoretically get around that, but not campbell. He's a great coach though.

Assembling a staff is part of the huge concern with hiring a guy with no NFL experience. Especially coming from a non-powerhouse school. The coaches at powerhouse teams almost always have a lot of NFL contacts simply because they constantly have NFL prospects on their team. Campbell would certainly not be getting top flight NFL assistants to come work for him.

No need to speculate when the same coach will be here next year.

and he failed miserably and was the laughing stock of every nfl fan and sports show.  he has never been  a coordinator has he?  so if he doesn't get a hc job he has no way to move 'up'?  i don't think anyone is gonna ask him to call plays.

I’m convinced, especially since I’m in favor of any coach whose name doesn’t rhyme with Don Divera.

    • Good read and stuff under it is not bad either. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/article/panthers-cb-jaycee-horn-says-184519429.html
    • While I'd love to add him, it just doesn't make sense for where we are at in our re-build right now. The only teams who should be interested are those who have a very legitimate shot at winning the SB this season, as any team who makes the trade is going to be mortgaging their future to make the move. Teams who make these kinds of trades and then give them the massive contract, in the hopes that it will expedite their path to contention, ALWAYS ends up backfiring because they have to give up the 1st round picks that are then needed to help build out the rest of the roster after eating up such a significant chunk of the cap on the new contract. There is no way the Cowboys trade him for anything less than 2 future 1st rounders (and probably more), plus we'll have to make him the highest paid non QB in league history.  Not to mention that it would then have made the Scourton and/or Princely picks a bit of a waste, as those 2nd and 3rd round picks would have been better off used on a ILB or DB
    • Like his approach to pre season that's ro get them out there and play together for a few plays and right about the night before and morning before.  Maybe we can come out the gate on fire I can smell the smoke from here!!   Go Panthers
