4 the draft guys: mid- tier draft: QB with some talent

This QB class kinda sucks from everything I've read. Now that doesn't mean there won't be one or two decent to good guys, but I'm hesitant to spend a draft pick on a QB in a bad class when we have SO many other needs.

Lack of young talent has really hurt this team this year imo. Not that Rivera would have played the young talent anyways.

Off the top of my head these are absolute needs this offseason in no order: DE x 2, NT (esp. if/when Poe gets cut), LT, LG, C, Nickel Back, FS, SS (if Reid isn't re-signed), LB (esp if Davis is gone and we don't re-sign Shaq). That's a TON of needs.

Realistically our draft could go:

1-DE

2-DT

3-FS

3-DE

4-NB

5,6,7 BPA

In this scenario we go defense super heavy and would have to address o-line in FA.

Does fix some major problems...so what do they do at QB if Cam is down for a while?

If Cam is out we are fuged anyways imo. This team desperately needs talent all over the place. A huge core group that has carried us for years is old/washed up/about to retire. It wouldn't matter if we drafted Russel Wilson in the third round

Again that's just my opinion - if we do draft a QB I'll be on board but I think we have more pressing needs

I think this should be the plan:

If Cam ends up sitting next year, we tank the season and get a QB in the top 5.

If Cam then comes back healthy and ready for another 5 years, we trade our new QB to get our 1st round pick back. If Cam isn’t better, we have a replacement.

Either way, we use this draft to get DL and OL help so a new QB has the tools around him to succeed if I comes to that.

You can't tell 60 other guys - some of whom will see this as their final shot, others of room will have this be their only shot - to tank the season just because one guy can't play (even if that guy is your starting quarterback).

A lot of folks have been saying Bridgewater recently, and honestly it's not a terrible idea if he'll come at the right price.  He should be willing, given he's thrown exactly three passes since 2015 ended.

We'd be fortunate to get him, even if only on a one year deal.  It would give Bridgewater a chance to showcase his talents and secure a long term deal (not necessarily with the Panthers) if things work out.

It would also give the organization an additional year to assess Cam's health status, allowing the Panthers to make an informed decision as to whether to stay the course or move in another direction.

It’s not an option right now but if Kyler Murray reworks his contract with the Athletics (I believe there is a clause that prohibits him from entering the NFL draft but I could be wrong) then he could potentially enter the NFL draft. At that point we could spend a 6th round pick on him or so and hold his rights during spring baseball. If he realizes at that point he doesn’t want to play baseball he can sign with us. He would be the Panthers property for one year and if he remains unsigned he would just enter the draft pool again. Many scouts believe this will happen.

I do also like Will Grier and think the positivity of his accuracy far outweighs the negatives of his arm strength. I’d spend a fourth on him but I don’t see him falling out of the second.

I also like Gardner Minshew as a late round prospect. He seems to be more of a back up type player but I like how hard he works.

    • As much as I despise Billy B, his philosophy on QBs is how I would approach things if I were a GM. You always keep looking for your next starter.  He has Bledsoe, who got injured and his backup ended up being the GOAT. Even while he had that going, he kept getting his next guy and developing them. When Brady got hurt, Cassel stepped in and went 11-5 and they missed the wild card by dumb luck. Who knows how far they would have gone if they had gotten in. Jimmy Gs career started in NE. There were others, but he always kept looking.  You can't be afraid to keep looking for your next starter, but it looks like we're afraid to look for more than a marginal one. If you're going to offer a $25m contract with incentives, that screams marginal QB. It also screams you're just a transition until we find our guy. After a 10 or 11 win season, he's not accepting that offer. And then you're in a Daniel Jones situation. Do you pay for a year of success and pray it wasn't a one year wonder?  To this point, Bryce has really produced nothing, yet for whatever reason, our FO has not even sniffed at the idea that we need a real QB room with real QBs. Dalton was never starter potential, Plummer was a joke. KP certainly isn't, neither is Grier.  Our approach to the QB room needs to be one of strength not fear. Bring in guys who can compete or who you think can compete. This is THE elite position, in an elite sport, paid premium salary, where production matters. Either you produce or you can lose your job. It's not mean, it's just the reality of the position.  And I'm really just tired of our candy ass approach to it.
    • If you plug Bryce onto the Pro Bowl roster you might have a chance to compete for a SB. If he's surrounded by top tier talent with a top tier defense on the other side, a field flipping punter, and a kicker good from 60+ you might have a chance. But that means you basically have to recreate Saban's Bama in the NFL and that's impossible... and Bryce couldn't win a championship in that environment either. What the Panthers didn't realize when they got so obsessed with his "PG mentality" was that what they were looking st was a "barely checks the box PG". The basketball equivalent of Bryce would be an undersized PG with marginal athleticism who can make the basic plays but adds nothing to the team in terms of elevating the overall team. Not a great shooter, not a great defender, not a great driver. Just a guy who can basically get you into the offense and be a matador on defense. Basically a placeholder while you look to upgrade the PG position.
