Three years after he arrived in Ann Arbor as the most celebrated recruit in the country, Gary somehow matched the hype. A powerful run defender and edge-setter, he has an outstanding combination of size and athleticism and will fit any scheme: explosive, sudden and a nightmare to block. His closing burst, high motor and natural instincts helped him to 3.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss in nine games. He missed three consecutive games earlier this season with a shoulder injury, but he was productive in his return.

 

Can play defensive end or inside rusher. Coming out of high school was rated number one player in the country at times and has freak talent we need... this is unlikely to be there but yes plz.

I'd be happy with Gary or Ferrell. I think Bosa will end up going top 5. Guys like Sweat and Allen seem more suited as 3-4 OLBs.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the coaching situation because we may end up moving from a 4-3 to a 3-4 for all we know.

Bosa is the best player in this draft...Probably going 1. Ferrell to me doesn't have enough tape and is one of those effort not elite athlete kind of guys...but i will wait til the combine to see his numbers..

Idk what his combine numbers will be like but the guy is a stud. He is the best player on the best D line in the nation. Coming back for his senior year (junior season) was huge because he was already a great pass rusher but he improved tremendously in run support which is what you want in your 4-3 DE.

He is number 2 imo behind Bosa for 4-3 DEs and I would prefer him over Gary.

I would love to get at least 2 top pass rushers out this draft. Im drooling over the idea next season. The last time this defense was truely good is when we had cj and hardy coming off the ends. That was fun to watch.

The size and versatility sounds a lot like Boston College's DE Zach Allen, a player I was spying who could drop to the second, but is projected as a top 25 player by ESPN. After watching some video, I do not see him going that high, but he is a nice LDE candidate.  I think he has some issues that could make him better instantly--like his stance and I think he could drop some weight (about 10 lbs).  Or you could add 15 lbs and make him a 3T DT.  

I realize the thread is about Gary, but I wanted to present a very similar player

#3 Gary is almost identical in size and both are the prototypical LDE-but Gary is quicker and seems to have been used with more versatility--which suggests he is much more athletic--After watching both players' highlights, man, Gary would be great fit here--but if we miss him, maybe Allen drops to us in round 2.

Gary is big enough to set an edge too which we desperately need. He kind of reminds me of Charles Johnson.

If he is in range he should probably be the pick.  Will be interesting to see him at the combine to be sure he is that big cause he moves like a LB.  

Wouldn’t mind a few dudes off that Michigan defense.

He is a better fit at LDE than we have had here for a while--the fact that he can move inside, hold the edge (that is huge), and stunt effectively AND get some pressure from the outside on a pass rush makes him a great fit.  I think he will be there.  I would add that a RDE should also be in the cards.

It's basically Peppers' role early on in his career here when he was a double digit sack artist.  If we can find a Rucker/Johnson to compliment, that would be perfect.  Gary can go 1 through 5 tech in a 4-3.  Versatile 3 Down 4-3 DE.

In general, I'd personally love if we moved to a more multi-front 4-3 on a regular basis and got an OLB that was a pass-rusher type like Seattle does (AZ, ATL are trying variations).  Then we could draft a Sweat type to compliment who flexes between OLB and 5 tech.  I'm talking a speedy pass rushing OLB/DE who has size.  So not a Haynes or Addison mold.

We essentially need a LE, RE, DT, and a pass rushing LB who's versatile scheme wise.  That's a lot to find in one offseason but this draft looks great on the DL so that's reassuring.
