Sidebar: It's shocking (well, maybe not) how they somehow thought Heineke was better.  Taylor was a good story and all but he had no zip on his throws or pocket awareness.  Allen was miles better in this regard.  

NOBODY thought Allen was better.  Not you, not me, not the coaches, not any other fan or self-appointed QB guru on the Huddle.  Not one person here even remotely pushed for Allen to be the backup over Heineke after watching preseason.  Allen also had several tryouts with other teams while he was sitting on his couch and not one of them thought he was worthy of even a PS spot.  In college, he lost every starting spot he had, so even in college he didn't show he was anything special.

He's always had the physical talent, but he has never put it all together.  His physical attributes are what gave him the opportunity, now he needs to show that he can play like this on a regular basis, and not just against backups on a team that is mailing it in while waiting for the playoffs to start.  He's a developmental guy that nobody saw having the kind of game he did yesterday.

We have no clue because we dont see him on a consistent basis, but the coaches do.  Also he played agsinst starters who werent mailing it in, thats just how NO plays defense.  Their defense sucks and they win on offense, which they had none on Sunday. He also looked better than Henicke last week when he subbed for him.

Lets be honest, the Saints had nothing to play for.  They were treating this like a preseason game, and were clearly not hyped up and ultra focused like they would have been if this game actually meant anything.   No, I don't think they tanked it, but their mental focus wasn't what is would have been in a meaningful game.

Yes, he did play against starters for a bit, and that's the exciting part of his performance.  Especially since he was playing behind our makeshift and porous OL.  He definitely looked like he belonged out there, but he needs to show he can do that for more than one game before we can buy into him as our long-term backup.  

As for what the coaches see, it wasn't much once the season started.  In preseason, he was a guy they brought in on a flyer to see if he can translate some of those physical tools into consistent performance.  It was more of a development deal than looking for much this year.  He was always the #4 QB, so didn't get much of a look (just like every other #4 in the league).  But once the season started, even when he was on the PS, he got very few reps, and never with the ones.  Preseason is for evaluating, the regular season is for preparing for your next opponent.  So, the coaches likely had a very limited perspective on him.  Without the benefit of hindsight, I don't think anyone but Allen and his family had any idea he was going to have that kind of performance...and that was mostly hope.

Understandable and I'm not saying I knew, just what I saw.  Don't forget the Saints had their starting secondary out there that first half.  He was throwing at Bell, Marcus W., Apple, Coleman, etc. it wasn't their backups.

      2026 World Cup Thread

      Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.

      Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.

      Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
