What to do with Matt Kalil

I know how the NBA trades expiring caps etc.  Like how Dwight Howard got traded only to get cut.

Cleveland did something similar with Brock Osweiler the other year with Houston.

 

Cutting Matt post June 1 opens 1.4 plus or minus I believe.

 

Now were we to trade him.  Would it open more for us woth them taking in the contract?  Then the team we trade him to can cut him post june 1.

Say we traded our comp 3rd and Matt for amother teams 5th.  Would it open more room for us then flat out cutting him post june 1?

Because he is due $7m this year in salary.  The $14.7m is dead money, which is a sunk cost, nothing you can do about that.

People see cap hit of $12.2m vs dead money of $14.7m and think it would cost more to cut him but you have to look at the big picture.  A post June cut cut would allow us to spread that $14.7m over two years (4.9m this year, 9.8m next) so we wouldn't really lose cap space this year.  We would actually gain $7.3 ($12.2m-$4.9m).  We would still have to account for the other $9.8m next year.

Another way to look at it is to not even consider June 1st cuts and just look at the total cap hit of keeping a player vs letting them go.  For example, if we cut him this year we still have to account for $14.7m in dead money.  Wether you want to spread it out over two years or not doesn't change the total.  If you keep him for one more year it will cost you $12.2m this year in cap space and you will still have 9.8m in dead money next year for a total of $22m.

So, cut him now and you have to account for 14.7m over the next 1-2 years.

Cut him next year you have to account for $22m over the next 2-3 years.

     He played his last down for us in preseason. That was the end. He will be cut the first day we can. No reason at all to keep him and 7M not too. 

 25M for one below average season. 

  But I was assured that this wasn’t that bad a contract since he signed. I laid out this exact scenario multiple times and was told how “wrong” I was. No outs. No escape. And Hurney didn’t do anything wrong. He did the only thing he could do.

Osweiler had a guaranteed base salary for that season. Not a bonus. Matt Kalil has all his guaranteed money. We have to account for the rest trade or cut. And no one is giving him 7M for this year, including us. So they will have cut him to avoid that 7M. . 

   He’s gone. I doubt any team is interested in a player that quit on his team while the other starting OT was playing in a contract year with multiple injuries.

Just laughing bro because NO player with any value, which (even though injured) Williams has because proficient tackles have GREAT value in this league, will sign a "prove it" deal.  An NFL player will have to be on his last rope to sign a "prove it" deal.
