If Ron goes 3-4 does that mean Tepper wants him around

There's no real indication that Tepper forced this. From what we've heard, it was more Rivera's initiative because he's frustrated with division opponents having his defense figured out.

So basically, I wouldn't read anything into it regarding his job security either way.

The espn article about how hands on Haslm is with the Browns gives me nightmares.

Dude cant get out of his own way.  I pray out new owner wont fall victim to that trap.

I'm all for owners being hands off and letting their football people run the team.

That said, my feelings would be a lot more favorable in this situation if we had better "football people" than Marty Hurney and Ron Rivera available for Tepper to trust.

So far Tepper seems more hands off the football side of the organization. That's great once we have quality people in place on the football side but bad short-term because of who is there now. Haslm is a great example of an idiot with money ruining everything. That was always my nightmare scenario for the team sale. As a fan, all I have to do is wait for the inevitable and the situation should fix itself in a year or three.

Marty Hurnery did an outstanding job at the 2018 NFL draft &  prior to Cams shoulder injury the Panthers were 6-2

but you say i want "better football people"

"alrighty then" whatever you say Mr. Scot.

I had similar thoughts on this...

If you are Rivera, you’ve got to be thinking this is a one year, make or break for your job here. Why would he risk, a high risk at that, to switch the defense over to a different scheme, with only one year to find the right personel, and implement the system?

He either is being forced to do something, or he’s been told he has a few more years with the organization, as long as he calls the defense.

I can’t read Tepper yet on his decisions, but I just don’t see Rivera going all-in this year, with a completely new look on defense. But, I also don’t see Tepper forcing something he’s not understanding of, or promising more years to Rivera’s future.

I can see Tepper wanting us to evolve with the rest of the league though.  It has become a pass happy league. It does is no good to be top 5 against the run and bottom 5 against the pass.  I would not put it out of the realm of possibility that Tepper would like us to follow the league. But he would not dictate the X’s and O’s.  It is evident that to compete we will need to rush the passer and protect on the backend.  Maybe Ron is doing this because he is on the hot seat.  And another season of watching our divisional opponents pick apart our soft zones is not going to keep Ron’s job safe.  Maybe if he tries to implement more of a hybrid scheme it may extend his career here.

I really dont think Ron is as worried about his job security as many fans want him to be or believe he should be.

I am totally ok with finding another coach after this coming season if it doesn't work out, but Rivera will have no problem finding a job in the NFL, probably as another head coach and at worst a coordinator.

Ron knows the position with Panthers is solid and maybe the best one he will get bc of having a franchise QB and future Hall of Famer at LB in Kuechly, but he's bounced around the league many times and had top defenses at each spot.

The league-trend right now is offensive wunderkids as head coaches, but there is always a need for defensive guys to counter that.

Hoping that Ron fails so Tepper sticks it to him and/or Hurney is the epitome of small-mindedness.

Regardless of what anyone on this board thinks, Tepper has evaluated both and found them to be competent. Both have led/built Super Bowl teams. Both have also made mistakes and underachieved.

Next year is a pivotal year, but I really dont understand the premise that they can't succeed or actively rooting for them to fail to tell people on a message board "I told you so."

    • fuging Christ dude this isnt hard.  Like at all.  I get you simping for this poo team is your thing but sometimes you have to look at reality.   Even removing his bum knee from the equation, none of this made sense.  He is 31.  He has been paid handsomely for his service here.  He was currently under contract for this season.  Why in the holy fug did anything have to be done 2 weeks before the season started.   The people for this move, in this thread are saying A) He deserved it (this is the nfl it doesnt work like that  B) It frees up cap space (then why in the fug didnt we do this in Feb or C) You logic (We are getting a deal at 53 million guaranteed for the next 3 years.   You realize with this deal we cannot cut or trade his ass for 3 years.  You understand this right?   So in my opinion we should have let this ride into the offseason and go from there, what he is going to threaten to walk, big fuging deal he would be 32 on a chronically bad knee, what other moronic franchise is going to give him 40 million up front?  It wasnt going to happen.   And you are acting like its impossible to replace a 32 year old RT with a bum knee.  Just go and draft someone, move Icky to RT.  There are tons of options instead of extending this dude 2 weeks before the fuging season.  The truth is Morgan and the shitheads in the FO fell for this dudes crying act and got all sentimental and shelled out another ext.  We are a poverty ass franchise that doesnt act professionally
    • Amazing what the prospect of being traded to Carolina will do for contract negotiations.
    • 5 Im glad football is back but after the embarrassment that was the browns pre season game where our starting D made Sanders look like a serviceable NFL QB, I lost hope again for a successful Panthers campaign this year.  I do hope I’m wrong!
