REPORT: Greg Olsen will play next season

With Greg, it's pretty darn simple from the Panthers perspective.  We just can't afford to cut him.  We have plenty of other players who "need" to be cut and doing so will hurt our cap.  We just can't get rid of everyone whom we might otherwise like to.

Greg is one who, when healthy, can be a key player for us.  So do you cut him, or Matt Kalil?  Greg, or Dontari Poe?

We have hard choices to make this offseason that are going to hurt our cap, but Greg isn't even in the top five of those choices.  Our best outcome for Greg is that he gets healthy, plays the whole season splitting time with and teaching Ian Thomas.  Next offseason, we can cut him with minimal cap impact *if* he doesn't produce.  Heck, if he's hurt again, maybe he retires and saves us the trouble.

Greg is a great possession receiving option when healthy. But at this point in his career do you want to take a big-play maker off the field for him? I'd rather have a slot like Wright in the game or a pure blocker like Manhertz to help the run game and nullify speed rushers in the passing  game. Asking Greg to block DEs and 3-4 OLBs usually kills running plays.

Nope. Kalil and/or Poe, sure. Olsen's cap/new cash for 2019 is $3.4m. That's not enough savings to release him over the chance that he plays a solid full season. There is no one we can get for $3.4m that is close to Greg. 2020, sure. You can save $8.1m in cash and cap and you know if he's healthy again or not.

What do you think the chances are "that he plays a solid full season"?
