OBJ to the Texans?

Facts are these, DG wasn't as good at drafting as we wanted but he did a darn good job fielding a team with some lower end FAs that really helped our team get in the playoffs.

Hurney has made some really good picks with the 1st round but struggled filling in the rest of the team and handled contracts poorly.

DG was sometimes too unsentimental to his detriment like with Norman, even though his price tag now seems like DG was right.

Hurney is too loyal. Imagine how much better we would be this year and beyond if we didn't give Olsen & TD the extension. Also, if we would have cut R. Kalil we would have saved a ton of money and had some carry over in this year.

Combined DG & Hurney would have been a really good GM.

Not including the 2017 season since that was Gettleman + Hurney.

Gettleman:
40W 23L 1T (.625)
x1 NFC Championship
x3 NFC South titles
x4 playoff appearances
x4 seasons (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016)

Hurney:
93W 99L (.484)
x1 NFC Championship
x2 NFC South titles
x3 playoff appearances
x12 seasons as Panthers' GM (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2018)

If we look include Hurney's time as Director of Player Operations in 1998, then the record is 97W 111L (.466). Can we please stop this ridiculous narrative that he  is/was a better GM?

Hurney is a absolutely terrible GM and at some point Tepper will figure that out.

So making the playoffs isn't your bar for a good GM?

He had very little to do with the team's overall success and was a huge reason why we never won another playoff game after 2015. Gettleman single-handedly destroyed the 15-1 panthers in two offseasons and was then fired. Hurney would have had back to back playoff appearances and who knows how far we would have gone if Cam would have stayed healthy. Does that also make him a good GM?

Gettleman was great at finding un-drafted free agents and didn't carry emotional ties to players past their prime. Hurney on the other hand is the polar opposite of that but has a better draft record. Like I said, both are below average gms.

Dave can't win poo in NY even with some solid talent on both sides of the ball because Eli manning is washed up. He wouldn't have won a damn thing in Carolina either if it wasn't for Cam Newton.

    • I think you mean relevant but they have been fine, the problem is the lack of in game adjustments.  He has also been just decent at recruiting.  Duke having tons of success hurts and just fine isn’t good enough at UNC.
    • I don't see it as drafting a premium player to sit and wait if Walker gets hurt. We need a legitimate swing T. Unless you have a Sewell or Slater type tackle that is pretty much a sure thing, these guys can need some time to develop year 1 just like a QB ideally should. They all haven't played the elite 5 star talent on the edge. If we think another franchise tackle has dropped to us at 19, you have to pull the trigger. The position is just too damn hard to find. If it's just a "we need a tackle and this guy has a T on the board", yeah, move on, take one in the later rounds. But if that guy is there, let him back up and learn a year, then slide him into LT on year 2 of his rookie deal.  I don't see us being able to offer Walker a multi year contract after a prove it year, pay Moton his final almost fully guaranteed year, Hunt, Lewis a center and do a 50-60m extension for Bryce. The 3 most important positions on the field are QB, blindside tackle (usually LT), and edge rusher. Those are the premium positions that cost the most and are hardest to come by. If a starting caliber talent is there at 19 you have to pull the trigger.  I understand the need for a DT and S. I've been on the C and FS train for years. If we weren't staring at a potential Bryce extension, it'd make the decision a lot easier I think. It's just with all these huge contracts I don't see how we can hedge our bets on being able or even wanting to re-sign Walker, especially if he has a bad year. Icky and BC's injuries really hurt our long term plans.  If no blue chip talent at those 3 key positions are available at 19, by all means pass and draft another position. But I think it's pretty safe to say we don't have a guaranteed lock at any of them right now beyond Phillips, and they have to be somewhat of a priority.
    • Not completely accurate. I'm sure Roy is lobbying for him and Larry Brown has spoke put in support too. But Hansbrough has made comments pretty critical and hinting at a need for change. Joel Berry has gone a step further and said the standard has not been met. Scott Williams who was a teammate of Hubert's at Carolina has gone all the way and said it's time for a change at head coach.
