Panthers looking for quarterback depth, but in draft rather than free agency

The Panthers know they need some quarterback depth, but they aren’t looking for him in March.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera just told reporters at the Scouting Combine that any potential backup to Cam Newton who isn’t on the roster would likely come from the college ranks.

“If we did do anything, I think it’d probably be in the draft,” Rivera said.

He never said we'd draft a QB. He just said we weren't signing a vet. (ie. NO KAEPERNICK)

I mean.  Does it really matter?  If Cam goes down, there is no FA or draftable QB that can replace him.  The season is over.  If we aren't drafting a QB that we intend to replace Cam with, does it really matter what warm body we find in the 6th round?

Somewhat surprised by this, there are some UFA that would make sense for us. Tyrod Taylor, Trevor Siemian, Ryan Tannehill

Who we pick could depend on what Rivera's definition of depth is. Is it someone who could come in and play right away like a Will Grier or is it someone like Gardner Minshew who could be a good QB3.

That has nothing to do with finding depth. 2000 was a shitty QB draft but Brady and Bulger were still found in the 6th.  They aren't pressed to find a starter.

I just listened to Clayton Thorson QB from Northwestern on Sirius Moving the Chains and he has 53 starts in college. He sounded pretty smart as you would think going to Northwestern. I'm not familiar with him anyone know his deal?
