I mean if you want to pay $9+ million for a RT coming off a major knee injury and then pray and hope Taylor Moton replicates his elite traits on the left side, while risking the fact that it could very well become a disaster, then I don't know what to tell you.

All signs point to Daryl Williams being the biggest risk investment we could make that could cost us. I'll be outright blunt in saying I agree when Vincent argues that there's little to no difference between Matt Kalil and Daryl Williams - and in some cases Williams was worse.

Yet when he gets his "all-pro label" people are blind to what the film and statistics show - a RT who had help and largely showed weakness when forced to go solo. AND who's coming off injury.

You have too many unknowns with switching Moton's position and praying Williams is competent with less help than he had under Shula's scheme, rather than keep the right side already strong even with a mediocre left side.

It could very well be an outright disaster if the Panthers try to do so.

He had the least ammount but was a turnstile.

There is a reason why he still rode the bench the last 1/4 of the season when he was back healthy.  If he was so good he wouldve been in while Clarke was getting beat left and right, especially when your coach is preaching at the end of each week "we are still in the playoff race, not out of it. And the goal is to get that playoff spot".  If Kalil was that half azz decent he would've been in the game but he wasnt.  Why?  Because he was trash.

You use the Pff metrics to show Kalil wasnt that bad then turn around and pretty much say you cant trust the PFF metrics pointing out Williams.  The other argument, was the bringing help over.  That chart, the 3 ahead of him in %of bringing in help.  Were all recebt high first round picks, who all are thought highly of on here, and 99% of the people on here are crying to have.

Williams graded out solid for a reason, our OL still looked solid for a reason with him at RT and Moton at LT (and remember that was with some random UDFA kid having to step in at LG filling a All-Pros shoes). Its 8-9 mil, this aint LT money its.  Its alot but its dam worth it for a guy who has been solid, a guy who already has chemistry with this OL and Turner, and a guy who is proven.  When you can turn around and cut Kalil and the money you save off of him, the 7.25 mil us going to cover 85% of what will Williams will be getting paid.  

We sit around and dilly with keeping Kalil.  We are going to have 2 MASSIVE holes at OT and DE.  2 of the more important positions out there.  And thats not a good start.

 

*and for anyone thinking we're just going to go out and sign a starting DE in FA, it aint happening.  They are going to be going for 14-15 mil min.  And even if we cut Kalil to open the cap, we'd be tight to sign one.  Without cutting him you wont be able to.

Kalil was a giant mistake.  The 7.5 million we save is huge.  I know it’s after June 1, and maybe we won’t find anyone of value by that point.  But we sure as hell can roll that amount over to the next year and use it to address Cams extension.  Kalil is a backup.  Backups aren’t worth that kind of money.

I think Daryl is a better RT than Kalil is a LT. But, we also have no idea what Daryl's market value is. Nor do we know (we as in us fans, surely the team knows) about his medical evaluations. Maybe the knee is a risk, maybe not. Either way, that is likely to play a significant role in the contract he eventually signs. We're assuming we'd have to pay him elite RT money. Maybe, maybe not. It also isn't Daryl or nothing. There are other FA OTs available.

What I do know is that Kalil is a below average starting LT when he's available. Out of a possible 48 regular season games in the past three seasons he's only played in 18. According to Over The Cap, we can save $7.25M by making him a post-June 1st cut. So, we can pay him another $7M for this coming season knowing that we'll likely get subpar play from him and that he'll likely get hurt forcing us to make OL lineup changed during the season OR we can make him a post-June 1st cut and put that $7.25M in cap savings toward improving the roster.

I'd move Moton to LT. He looked good there in his one appearance. I don't care that he may be better at RT. Most OTs are since RT is the easier position to play. If a guy can handle LT, you pretty much have to play him there due to how difficult legit LTs are to find. Guys that play RT do so because they either can't play LT or because their team has a better LT on the roster. Even if we are hell-bent on keeping Moton at RT, fine. We need a LT anyway. Kalil can't be trusted to stay on the field and he's such when he is. Even if he is on the roster this year, hes surely going to be a cap casualty next year. Remove the crutch. Don't be satisfied to limp by with another season of subpar LT play and likely be forced to insert a warm body at the position when Kalil inevitably gets hurt again. Kalil on the roster is fool's gold, plain and simple.

There's a reason the above information came out last off-season. Williams value is artificially inflated by that strange all-pro designation. The organization knows they had to send a lot of help his way and value him as such. Hence the monster gap. 

Things changed a little this offseason with Kalil's health, Williams injury probably bring the gap a closer but it's also a weak free agent OL class which starts pushing the gap right back out.

It may be the thing to do---he could have a decent year, and they did keep Moton on the right side last year---We should draft a LT and let him take the job. 

We all knew it was a stupid signing when it happened.

Why are there people afraid of moving Moton to LT and instead would like to keep Kalil there? Why are you afraid of moving him? Cause he could be worse at LT, yet still be better than Kalil? I'd rather resign a hurt Williams also than keep a healthy Matt Kalil. Matt is trash.

Thing is theres no true good LTs in this draft,  a bunch of stud RTs and interior guys but not LTs

Taylor- even all the guys whi have him the highest say he's a RT, there's a reason he never starterd at LT at Florida especially when the LT was waaaaay worse 

Jonah Williams- half of the people now have him as a OG

Little- 80% of the mock have him almost falling out of the 1st agree while he has the tools.  He is raw and never lived up to the high school hype which has shown from this time last people thought he was a top10 or 5 pick then he really struggled thus year.

Dillard- most have as a 2nd round grzdeas he looked good in gym shorts but was Mike Remmers 2.0 when the actual scrimmages or game happened at the senior bowl, also showed that those wide open spread offenses helped him by really only allowing defenses to rush 4 most of the time.

Agreed on Moton to LT. He looked better in his one game there than Kalil has since his rookie season. I think we're highly unlikely to land someone this off-season who is a better LT in 2019 than Taylor Moton. That includes Matt Kalil, any possible FA and any possible draft pick.

Disagree on Daryl. If the medical team is red flagging that knee we gotta let him walk. Throwing good money after bad at OT isn't going to help us. If he's healthy, we should try to re-sign him. If someone wants to massively overpay him, wish him the best of luck. But if he's healthy and we can get him for a market value starting RT contract, we should absolutely keep him. If not, we should absolutely pursue other FA options and/or look to draft an OT early.

Me too. Just saying a broken Williams is better than a healthy Kalil.

Matt Kalil is such a dumpster fire. It is hard to imagine too many being worse.

I really have a hard time believing we can't do better with the money we save by cutting him. How hard could it be, really?

I don't think we have significant financial incentive to cut him. With that being the case, he might as well stick around and do his best.
