Name your front seven for 3-4, 4-3.

3-4:

REDGE: Burns | MILB1: Luke | MILB2: Thompson LEDGE: Irvin

RDE: Short | NT: Poe | LDE: Love/Addison/Butler?

4-3:

SOLB: Burns | MLB: Luke | WOLB: Thompson

RDE: Addison | UT: Short | NT: Poe | LDE: Irvin

I would throw in nickle but there would be like 4 different line-ups we could field for nickle in big nickle, 3-4 nickle, 4-3 nickle, and even 2 - 4 nickel which is one of Rivera's favorites.

We are short on 3-4 DL, but I think we could get by. We have 3 starters and 1 or 2 backups for that scheme. I would look for us to pick up some though in FA. Our 3-4 DEs need to be like 4-3 DTs.

In our base defense I don't think Burns will start. I'd say Irvin and Mario will the the OLBs in the base 3-4.

Burns will be in for pass rushing downs unless he shows he can play the run. Same goes for Miller.

We still will probably look to sign a vet 3-4 DE but right now I'd say Poe and Butler are the NTs, Love and Short DEs. There are like 4 other DTs on the roster currently who will fight to fill in depth / PS.

Cox will probably be tried at DE and the other guys who played 4-3 end last year will get their shot at OLB. Guys like Haynes and Obada probably have a better shot succeeding as 3-4 OLBs anyways.

The concept Rivera has in mind is for these players to play either without having to substitute.

I know he says that, but there's just no way around subbing 1 or 2 guys. I know Addison would have to come out for Butler in the 3-4 at least.

1. If the offense doesn't substitute than our defense would have to be quick to make that substitution

2. If you substitute than the offense can determine our defensive set based on who the see coming in. Countering the whole hybrid defense.

That's why our FA and draft defensively has been based on versatile players.

Yeah.  Still don't see a way around subbing at least 1 player. Unless we're plugging Addison ahead of Irvin or Miller in 3-4 sets.

3-4 set

Olb- Irvin, Miller,

ILB - Kuechly, Thompson, Carter, smith

Olb - Addison, Burns, haynes

De - Love, cox Jr,

NT - Poe, Butler

De - KK, Obada

If you have the starters on the field. The move to 4-3 looks like

De- Addison

NT - Poe

Dt - Love

De - Short

Move Irvin and Thompson to OLB, Kuechly stays in the middle.

Been thinking, Obada is already 265 and 6-6, probably ask him and Cox Jr to add bulk to play end in the 3-4.

That said I think it's a pure 3-4 move as the new base.

IMHO the only interesting question is what the nickel looks like.  IF we only play in base 30% of the time and that gets split between the two fronts, we won’t see either of those very much.

My guess is you take one of the 3-4 ends off and run a 2-4 as defaukt like 50% of the time.  3-3 maybe 12% and and maybe even some 2-3.  Like 8%.

Id guess we see a pure 3-4% 20%  and 4-3 10%

    • The good news is that we are pretty uniquely well established to address all of our needs this season. We have $14m real cap space, and something like $40m in trade deadline cap space. Not sure exactly how that works out. But, we have the room to absorb any bad contracts. With recent rule changes regarding retention, that went into effect this season, we now have a huge advantage in the trade market.  On top of that, while we do have obvious needs, we also have a glut of talent in certain areas that we struggle to find ice time for. We are over-stocked on scrappy talented lil-guys, strong defensively sound 3rd liners and shutdown left shot dmen. Whether it's a package or separate deals, idk. But, one of each from Stank/Blake/Nads, Erob/Carrier/KK/Jank, and Walker/Nystrom; throw in some 1st round picks (and frankly any other prospects they want) and we should be able to come out with a 1b to pair with Bussi and either a 2c with size or a 2c and size.   TL/DR We got the money, you got the stuff?
    • I don’t  think 6’4 was ever considered small or undersized. Baby hands tho, yes that was his thing That’s an interesting idea, like an optical illusion? Sounds like you have personal experience with this!
    • in the 25' draft the Carolina Panthers had hired Brandt Tillis someone who actually understood how to build a successful team & build through the draft .  this team was yes mismanaged for years prior to Brandt Tillis joining the team in 25' & rarely done anything right in the draft outside occaionaly getting lucky on an UDFA such as Jalen Coker who's dad coincidentally happened to be a huge Carolina Panthers fan, hint hint  ...just saying
