The NFL proposes idiotic 18 game solution

Welcom to the 2021 CBA negotiations and the owner's opening salvo. The NFL knows the players won't want it, so to keep the keep the current 16 game, the players will have to give up one of their demands.

It's nothing personal Jack. It's just good business.

Definitely a dumb idea, but it would be kind of funny trying to figure out which games you bench Cam for at the beginning of the year

Or worse, imagine Cam starting a game with all backup o-linemen in. Didn't think there could be a worse scenario than Kalil and Aminu starting, but that might top it

NFL players don't want 18 games

NFL Idea

Now  a player could sit out two games that could cost them the division or a playoff spot

They expect players to play in those games  because every game counts in the NFL.

The owners are counting on pressure from the Coaching staffs and fan bases to "convince" players to take one for the team

This proposal is essentially probably just converting two preseason games to regular season games and keeping the number of games played by individual players the same. It's just incredibly idiotic because you're going to inevitably have teams missing the playoffs in large part because key players had to sit out in losses that ended up being pivotal. No one wants to see that poo happen... unless it's happening to the Saints.

Thinking more about this, the ONLY way it works to me is to add a BYE week and reduce preseason games. Something like...

  • Three preseason games - Added roster spots/cap space, less cuts to make
  • 19 Week regular season - - 17 regular season games (meet in the middle), 2 BYEs, with each team getting one during Weeks 4-10, and one during Weeks 11-16 or so.

Owners get a couple extra weeks of revenue, TV deal goes up, cap goes up, etc. If there are rules in place to rest players, can't see QB's and specialists being included.  They're officiated differently, take less hits, etc. (unless you're Cam), and a 2nd string QB or K are going to lose you a lot more games than a 2nd string DT.

People hate cheese being moved. It’s just going to be that way.

It doesn’t matter what changes,.. better teams will still win and those stuck in the past will lose. It’s just the way it is.

if they do it, the backup positions will become much more important. Again, the Belichecks will adjust and win and the Lions will still be the worst sports franchise ever.

Actually I think it will make it easier to have perfect seasons for better depth teams.

It also means more backups will play in games that aren’t meaningless so you see more from them.

i don’t support it and don’t think it will happen,... but there’s nothing I can do to stop it and I will still watch if it does.

I could see the players agreeing to this if it came with a big expansion of NFL roster sizes and salary caps. It would make depth be a hyper critical aspect and also be a crazy amount of gamesmanship about who got rolled out each week.

Still think it is a dumb idea overall but perhaps not a complete disaster if the NFL handles it correctly, which is highly unlikely.
