Mario Addison could be cut/traded- save 8 million cap

It could come down to Mario or Bradberry/Shaq on the books side.

Gimmie the young guys.

Mario looks like a bad 3-4 fit unless hes rushing the passer.

Its a young mans league and Mario is about to turn 32.

None of our OLB can cover anybody, so I don't know why Mario is being singled out. Most OLB are rushing the passer every time in a 3-4 defense.

There are several players on the team I would love to see cut - Addison definitely isn't one of them

Burns is already showing out and deserves more snaps.

Panthers have far too many players on one year deals, after cuts half maybe on one year commitments.

Bradberry, Shaq, McCoy, Williams, Wright, and Love are the biggest ones.

Mario(31 years old) looks terrible when asked to drop in coverage.

I get your point, but c'mon man. Mario & Bruce Irvin are only going to be here for another year & that's it. We're using them as starters so Haynes & Burns can earn their way up. Again, you can't rush a rookie pass rusher into starting lineup until he's earned it. Yes, he has 4 sacks. But against who? 2nd/3rd team O-lines, that's who. Haynes & Burns both have been very impressive this year. But that doesn't necessarily mean that are 100% ready to rush top dollar o-linemen.

Cut him to save $8M to do what....I fell like OP didn't think this through. Freeing up that money does littler to extend those guys as they're all under contract, and we have around 15M in available cap space at the moment.

We are geared up for a real playoff / superbowl run it makes 0 sense to cut the most established edge threat we have, in all seriousness the deeper the rotation the better.

I'm going to say it: Mario Addison isn't that good.

2018 - 9

2017 - 11

2016 - 9.5

So you're telling me 29.5 sacks the last three years // being this consistent isn't good....I wonder if any of you even really keep up with this team, vs just spouting off on players you don't like as much.

On a team that could do nothing in the pressure department as a unit with a 38 year old JP, and a slump year for KK, you call the guy leading our team in sacks the last three years, not that good at what he's paid to do, come on man.

The NFL sack leaders over the last three years:

  • Chandler Jones - 40.5
  • Khalil Mack - 36.5
  • Von Miller - 34.5
  • Ryan Kerrigan - 33.5
  • Everson Griffen - 31.5

I do have concerns about his ability to drop, but we also added more 3-4 OLB personnel to help -- Irvin, Burns, Haynes, Miller are all better athletes with a little bit more cover ability. So I'm not to worried about that.

For what Addison makes by comparison to that list and what he means to the team this season there is no need to cut him, or trade him.

While I do want to poo the idea of cutting addison,I do question if his skillset translates to the 3-4 well. While he's our best pass rusher in the 4-3 which will will still use plenty of nickel, is he a liability in the 3-4? It's no secret he looks like a giraffe on roller blades in space.. I dunno the long term fit if we go to more 3-4 isn't there

It’s the last year of his deal and he is 31. I’d be surprised if we planned to re-sign him. I suspect the plan would be to let him go, have Burns take over full time starter then draft some more depth.

Remember we are going to be lots of 4 man fronts particularly against teams with good running games and if we get gashed in the running game using 3 man fronts. We went to the 3-4 because we couldn't fine 4-3 DEs, everyone was an OLB. So we wouldn't get rid of the best we have after we took years to develop him. Nah.

Valid point. Ive still seen 4-3 looks in pre-season, but Im still not sure he is the best we have(at this stage).

If you have 50 snaps do you want 40-burns 10-mario or 40-mario 10 burns?

True but Mario is by far the worst out of the bunch, like m28 said "he looks like a giraffe on roller blades in space".

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
