Something is not right in Carolina and it goes beyond Cam Newton

Excellent piece by Jourdan Rodrigue on The Athletic.

Subscription only, but here’s a taste:

“But the ball used to go to Newton when a miracle was needed. Will he still be asked for miracles? Is it still fair of us to ask him for miracles?

Thursday night, the ball did not go into the hands of Newton, the most transformative player in franchise history, with the game and a losing streak on the line, because something isn’t right, and that “something” looms vastly into this team’s universe, loathsome and fearful, and unsaid.

The call instead went to McCaffrey on fourth down, with one yard to gain, and the game on the line, and the play failed because, though it was cleverly-designed and perhaps called because it was unexpected, something about it didn’t feel right to Buccaneers cornerback Vernon Hargreaves...

There is a feeling permeating through the building; listen closely to Thursday night’s damp concrete walls and sparse, angry crowds and down-turned mouths and walk silently through the bunker-like belly of the building from terse press conference to tense, bewildered locker room and it’s there, creeping and insidious.”

I’m glad you made this thread because I have something to say on the subject. But watching this team play legit depresses me, and I’m not saying that in a funny way like “omg this team sucks it’s so depressing!”

But watching this team is like going to a concert of your favorite rock band who obviously should have hung it up years ago but they are out there on stage looking rough and haggard, there big bellies hanging over their leather jeans and getting out of breath after one of two songs, it’s just plain depressing.

Thats what watching the current Panthers remind me of, everyone from the coaches to the players just look like abunch of guys that absolutely  hate their jobs and can’t wait to just go home and get paid.

No energy, no excitement, down trodden faces, poor body language. This is just a legitimately depressing team to watch and after the game is over it feels more like I just finished watching Schindler’s list and not a football game. I just feel depressed and empty afterward

That was pretty much the vibe in the stadium during the game.  Something felt off the entire time and that includes  before kickoff.  Even the player intros seemed uninspired.

I mean, you can just feel it when watching this team. Back in 2015, I felt the energetic atmosphere, I felt the hype, I felt like the team actually cared. These last two weeks I've felt NOTHING. No emotion, no motivation, no energy.........nothing. I remember one play where (I think it was) Donte Jackson made a good play, celebrated briefly, looked around and saw nobody celebrating with him, and he just jogged back to the sidelines. It was depressing to watch.

I just think the players are just done playing for Ron. Rivera has sucked out the last little energy this team had when he couldn't coach for his life the end to last season. I don't think they believe in him anymore. It's like that dull marriage you stay in just because you're scared to be lonely.

Late Fox era vibes all around for sure.

I believe John madden talked about ‘shelf lives’ with coaches as to why he retired from it so early as players stop listening

Rivera should have been gone two years ago.

He definitely  should not have been back this year and to my mind he is responsible for the demise of Newton

Concerning the atmosphere, Hope is gone  belief is gone based on Cam

he desperately wants to be the same guy   He tries to be  he can’t

my opinion is he can’t be, physically or mentally or emotionally  I feel like he has checked out and I started seeing it last year   Even the ball handing to kids seemed staged

he is far far too thin   No one wants to say this but it is football not basketball

the pain and the rehab has gotten old and he apparently spoke of depression last year  the shots to the head in sept 2016 and all the subsequent punishment behind an inferior line to now, who could blame him

I said it out loud in a thread from the stadium Thursday night and PhillyB flipped a bit over it I don’t care  I saw what I saw and it breaks my heart and everyone else’s heart  except assholes like Collin Cowherd who have never performed at a high level in their llife

Maybe he will have a few good games left. Maybe Superman isn’t gone.

We are talking about a very great and prideful athlete...a Heisman winnner. A mvp

regardless, god speed cam. Whatever you do, you gave me and friends in that stadium great joy
