LaCanfora: Newton could miss "multiple games"

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Most recent speculation has had Newton returning after the 49ers game, and that's consistent with the timeframe most of us have been expecting. But apparently some think it might be a little longer, i.e. at least one more game, and maybe more still.

For the record, I've always found Jason LaCanfora to be very hit or miss as a source, and a decent portion of this story is based on league speculation, but make your own judgment.

CBS Sports: Newton could miss multiple games

Quote

It remains highly unlikely that Panthers quarterback Cam Newton plays in Week 8 when the team returns from the bye, as originally reported last week, and sources said an absence of another week beyond that is possible as well.

The Panthers, 4-0 under backup Kyle Allen, are in lockstep with Newton that he should take as much time as possible to ensure his foot sprain is 100 percent healed when he does return. There is a sense that recovery will require multiple weeks more of rehab, practice and increased conditioning given how much time the former MVP has missed and how little physical activity he has been permitted to undertake during his absence.

It's virtually certain that Allen will start against the 49ers in Week 8, with Newton just set to return to the field this week following the team's trip to London and bye week. Once Newton is healthy, it is not an absolutely certainty he returns as the starter, I'm told. The Panthers, as a practical matter, have yet to even begin to discuss the scenario at quarterback, sources said, with Allen still the starter and Newton not cleared to return to a game, and they don't intend to address the situation until that time.

But there have been no public -- or private -- declarations about the situation yet, which is being read around the league as leaving the door open for Allen to continue as starter. The second-year quarterback has executed the offense well, consistently pushing the ball down the field, and Allen has to yet to lose a game in five starts dating back to last season. Newton, on the other hand, has struggled while dealing with injuries dating back to the shoulder issue he suffered in the middle of last season.

At this point I think it's pretty obvious Cam is 100% healthy. Now it's just a wait and see approach until Kyle shits the bed so Ron can pull the trigger

I hate using injuries as an excuse though to simply deflect from what in reality is a true QB controversy. I get the fact you don't want to create a media spectacle, but it's getting pretty ridiculous at this point.

Just come out and say what everyone else knows to be fact. Cam is 100%, but this team is clearly better with Kyle at the helm, and this whole "we're not gonna rush cam back" bc of injury and not because of performance is quite honestly disrespectful to the QB who's completely turned our season around.

Show some damn loyalty and respect to the people who currently deserve it Ron.

Looks like Kyle Allen is finally going to have to play some real defenses

Next 3 opponents are 49ers, Titans, Packers

Football Outsiders has the 49ers as the best pass defense in the NFL, Green Bay is 5th, and TEN is 10th

Going to be a brutal stretch for Kyle

While not the elite level some of these defenses are, he did face decent defenses in houston and tampa according to these measurements and did fine.  Fwiw, I only worry about him being able to compete with GB because Aaron Rodgers is turning back into a demigod and they are the only one of those 3 teams that can put up points and make us chase from big deficits all game.  If the game is close, then it opens the playbook up and doesnt force allen to throw 40 times, he can let cmc control the game.

There is literally nothing to suggest Newton is 100%. Zero.

How is it obvious exactly?

He suffered a Lisfranc injury

It would be impossible for him to be 100% healthy in this short of a period of time with a lisfranc unless he was some kind of mutant/Wolverine

Do some reading

Agreed. I have heard multiple guys, some who had the injury, say they would be surprised if it will heal this season.  That sucks.

Notice how it doesn't say "the Panthers". Agenda pushed.

    • Let's be completely honest about this... Our WR room is AT and a bunch of question marks. Thielen is the only guy we know who knows the route tree completely, understands play calls and can regularly get open/beat close coverage when necessary. He's long in the tooth, isn't the speediest guy on the field but he plays like a pro, starting level wide receiver. Xavier, last season looked great at first, but man he kind of petered out down the stretch and would disappear in a number of games. He wasn't reliable on routes or getting open and where he was supposed to be a king at contested catches, he often looked a bit intimidated. I'm not saying he's a washout by any means. Anyone with his size, speed and catch radius could make it big in the NFL, but can he do it? He'll need to show more than he did in the preseason before we can really rely on him as a WR1 or WR2.  Coker was a revelation last season, he really played way above his (non)draft status and flashed multiple times in games and was a steady performer. What we need to find out, though, is whether he was benefiting from being an unknown that wasn't getting maximum effort from opposing DBs or if he was just outworking and outhustling everyone on the field. We should find out this season. We sure as hell didn't find out much in the pre-season (from him or any receiver or QB for that matter). He's still a question mark, but I think he has the look of the real deal. He might be this generation's next Thielen. Now, let's talk about Tet. High first round draft pick, first true WR off the board this year. Stellar career out west in college. Has the swagger of the WR1. And man, y'all are going to get mad about this but... he comes across as a mook. And in the pre-season he performed, well, not so great against poor opposition of second and third stringers. Yeah, he caught that one moonshot ball in the first game but really, nothing else lighting the place up. Rookie endzone drop in that game, too. He's still young and adjusting, I'm sure, but I was hoping to see something of a breakthrough kind of guy. I'm still looking. Hunter Renfro? Gosh, I hope he can make the team and make a comeback to his old form. It would be such a great story. But maybe neither one of those happens. We won't know until Tuesday and then, if he makes it past there it could be weeks. So, TL;DR: AT is all we can bank on right now. We couldn't afford to let him go considering the number of unknowns we'd be throwing out there for our QB, who himself is still an unknown. One thing to add: Our receivers coaching group has their work cut out for them. I hope they are up to the task, but the pre-season gave me little reason to believe in them. And I really need something to believe in here in Carolina.
    • Same I think Randsom is a baller..... hopefully we don't have to suffer through 4-8 games of Scott blowing azz to get him on the feild.
    • Linebacker is the biggest need - I hope we figure out a way to address it. Krys Barnes is the only one who even moderately flashed.  Super nervous about Trevin/Rozeboom as a duo (Still like Trevin) I'd be excited if we had a better vet to mentor Trevin.  Or a better younger guy to support Rozeboom.  They just don't fit well and it may be a big problem against the run, even with our DL much improved.
