It’s been discussed.

Slye is a rookie, isn’t paid to be a top 5 kicker with bottom half stats, and is attempting kicks we for seasons avoided with Gano. Gano is a seasoned vet and was over paid.

I think everyone just has lower expectations for Slye vs. thinking he has the long term solution. He has the leg power which you can’t teach. The things he needs to work on he will.

The real tragedy is Butker. Rivera seems to favor Gano to a fault but wouldn’t ever attempt 35-45 year sets with him.

First: Gano kicked plenty of long FGs.

Second: Butker was not the answer. He has missed his share, particularly during crunch time. He was a key reason KC was booted out the playoffs one season.

I didn’t say long FGs, I said intermediate. I remember Rivera always avoiding 35-45 yard FGs for like two seasons.

But this all has to be put into context; years in the league, confidence in kicks/importance of said kick (choking) and most importantly your salary vs. production. I’d rather a kicker make 1/4 being the game winner vs. make 3/4 and lose the game winner. Stats don’t tell you this.

Butker and Slye May not be the answers and they may miss kicks BUT they were/are young and their salaries are nothing compared to Gano. They’ll improve over time. Gano is what he is. It’s not as simple as this kicker’s stats vs. that kicker.

At the end of the day I think we should move on from Gano and if that means everyone else too I’m fine wit that as well. I agree we should pay top $ for a kicker as long as that kicker is a top kicker.

Gano is the type of player Rivera would drag out years past his prime and not know when to let go and move forward with a riskier rookie - whether he was the long term answer or not - to find the long term solution.

There are some things to consider.  Slye is tied for number 1 in the NFL for 50+ yard FG attempts and outright number 1 in 40-49 yard attempts.  5 kickers have more than 4 50+ yard attempts.

Prater DET - 5-6

Maher DAL 4-7

Slye CAR 4-7

Bryant ATL 2-6

Fairbairn 2-5

Sly has 21 total attempts with 15 being 40+.  Kickers with high FG% don't seem to rely on the long FGs.  They get regular short shots.

If you look at the top 10 FG% kickers, they are all getting ones in the 20-29 yard range (where Slye isn't getting much action), and only 1 of the top 10 FG% kickers has more than 2 50+ attempts.

The major issue I see is why aren't moving the ball well enough to regularly give Slye the 20-39 yard shots, having to rely more on 40+ ones.  Kickers with high FG% typically have those in the 20-39 range.  Butker, for example has 7 attempts in 20-29, 6 in 30-39, 9 total in 40+.  We are putting more pressure on our kicker in long ball situation than probably any other team in the NFL.  Because our offense sputters out and we can't move the ball.

He's 15/21 for a percentage of 71%. 20/22 on extra points.

Gano, the guy that was getting death threats the past few years, was 14/16 on field goals last year for a percentage of 88% and 13th in the league.

Remind me why we all hate Gano yet worship Slye again?

EDIT: Slye has missed twice as many field goals this year as Gano missed in 2017 and 2018...combined.

are we counting free kicks and blocks as misses?

Gano is getting the same treatment Cam is getting. The older more expensive injured option vs hey "we can save a dollar and get bye with a lesser slightly worse(much worse) brand. What do we need this guy for" it's a what have done for me lately league" lately Slye has been on the field and the team is winning, so he must be good right?

1 50+ miss was a weird rare free kick. Surprised it counted as a miss because idk weird rule (TB game).

1 kick blocked then another impacted (Jville game killed him, 2 FGs 1pa). Campbell owned us that game plus Dwill60 sucked majorily.

Take out the weird and 1 horrible game, you get a 85% FG which is not bad at all.

But if you are going to rag him, be honest in your context first.

    • My general thoughts on the roster as it stands right now:  - Most interesting positions to watch: TE, NT, WR.  - If we add a TE I feel like it'll be a bigger name FA or Kenyon Sadiq in the 1st round. I don't expect us to take a TE that early with our need at tackle, though, so it's likely one of the top FA TEs or we ride with Tremble/Sanders/Evans again. Signing a mid-level FA or drafting another mid-round TE isn't going to help us at this point. We have three of those guys already.  - I don't buy the 1st/2nd round WR hype. I do think we will sign someone to play the slot because XL is... not good. John Metchie, Juan Jennings and Calvin Austin would make sense if the money does.  - NT could be interesting because I don't get the sense that they view Bobby Brown as a true starter. This could be a position we look to add a veteran starter at or possibly take one early in the draft.  - Devin Lloyd was a huge addition, but we need another starter beside him. I fully expect us to go after one in the 2nd round. Jacob Rodriguez makes a ton of sense here.  - The Luke Fortner signing gives us a veteran fallback at center this season. I don't expect he'll end up being our long-term starter, but it's likely he will at least begin the year atop the depth chart. Even if we draft a center it's unlikely that player ends up being a day-one starter. But I think right now we're likely targeting a center in the 3rd-4th round as that seems to be where the value is.  - We have no punter on the roster. Interested to see if we sign a veteran or go the draft/UDFA route.  - The OT situation is pretty bleak. I now fully expect us to take a tackle at #19, but even after the Stone Forsythe signing we also need better depth there. Brady Christensen would be an idea re-signing; I also like Jamaree Salyer from the Chargers as a younger option that still has room to develop.  - Guard depth is also lacking. Again, having a versatile backup like Brady Christensen would go a long way toward having some security for our entire OL, but even if he comes back we should add another veteran backup, IMO.  - I assume Lathan Ransom would be the starting FS if we played today, but we know Evero loves him some Nick Scott so I won't be surprised if/when we re-sign him. He's basically the defensive version of David Moore, unfortunately. Ideally we'd look to add a true FS, but I don't get the sense that is a big priority at the moment.  - Nickel corner is a need and I fully expect us to sign someone in the next few days to upgrade over Chau Smith-Wade. Long-term, I won't be shocked if we go CB earlier in the draft than people might expect given Mike Jackson's contract expires after this year.  - I wouldn't be shocked to see us sign a RB. Sean Tucker or Brian Robinson could be interesting. We know what Chuba can do, but Jonathon Brooks has to be considered a question mark at this point.
    • Considering the Raiders and Crosby’s disagreements about his health late last year and the Ravens’ history of being an extremely well run organization I lean towards the Ravens not being in the wrong here
    • Hoping for Chig as the TE signing.  N'joku and Goedert are more proven and names, but give me the guy entering his prime that hasn't missed a game over the older guys with better stats but injury history.
