Nick Wright: If Panthers move on from Cam, they’ll be drafting a QB in first round of 2021 draft

Nick Wright is, in my opinion, one of the best NFL pundits out there.  This morning he was saying that it would be a mistake for the Panthers to trade Cam Newton when he has at least 5 years left in the tank when healthy. His shoulder and foot injuries are not career ending and top QBs don’t grow on trees.  He also doesn’t think Allen is the long term answer for the franchise.

This assumes that Cam wants to stay, which he may not, but if he does, we should retain him in a prove it year and bite the bullet on $19 million.  Well worth the risk for the best QB we have ever had.

He's right. KA doesn't look like the future. It's hard to get a franchise QB. There's more to a QB than just wins and losses. It's important to note KA is in the 20s in all his other stats. He's right that 21 million is low or a QB in this league. He's right about Jacksonville being in a mess after gambling on Bortles.

I agree with all of this.

I do think people that are penciling in Trevor Lawrence to us though are getting WAY ahead of themselves. There are a lot of pieces that are bad on this team, but I don't see us losing enough games to get the #1 pick in 2021 in any kind of scenario. I think Justin Fields would be way more likely and I like him more anyway (sorry Clemson fans).

Tepper won't get rid of a Cam Newton that can be healthy again.

Unfortunately, from what I understand they don't believe he can be healthy for any significant amount of time.

Trevor is a monster.  Wait until playoff time when he isn’t bored.

    • Taking only players from the sheet that are realistically available in or after the listed round, I’d like… 1st: DT Caleb Banks (Styles not realistic) 2nd: LB Jacob Rodriguez 3rd: OT Best available from Bowry, Barber, and Casey 4th: CB Daylen Everette 5th: S Jalen Huskey 6th: RB Adam Randall 7th: IOL Best available from Lemieux, Dawkins, Leausa, and Brose   I know nothing about some of the players listed, but it seems like that would be the best way it could fall for now. I’m sure the list of who we meet will change a ton, and there will also be players we don’t meet with to keep quiet. I’d love to pick up Randall in the late rounds.
    • Not what I said. They know within the building why we aren't utilizing TEs more. If the rumors were true that we were seriously pursuing a couple of decent receiving TEs that strongly points toward a lack of quality receiving TEs currently on the roster. Does that mean we consider drafting one at 19? I don't know, but it wouldn't shock me and if we did there's only one guy it would be. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see TE drafting somewhere in the first three rounds.
    • Yeah, I don’t know. Tepper was behind the Bryce selection. Behind firings and hiring over his lack of development.  He doesn’t have to literally tell them their hands are tied for them to know this. It is in the air constantly. The Canales Bryce play calling was even portrayed by more than one person as Canales failing Bryce, instead of Bryce being responsible for his own performance (except when he does well, then it is all him). Now they have an extra coach in, to help the new OC get results from this QB.  The atmosphere is not welcoming to prototypical young QBs that have talent. You get Jake Plummer types or old vets. I think we are stuck.
