Possible 2020 Cap Casualties

I think Cam will be traded.  Even if we thought he could play, I do not believe our roster gives us a legitimate shot to compete.  Get a 2nd and 3rd and start the rebuild.

We're sitting on 10m in dead cap already.  No reason to rack up more dead cap by cutting Poe/Short/Paradis, etc.  We can cut Paradis and Turner next year after we draft their replacements.  The only additions to our dead cap I'd make is Olsen (who will retire) and Gano (who is grossly overpaid).  Otherwise I don't cut anyone.

There are so many free agents this year - Shaq, Irvin, McCoy, Addison, Butler, Boston, Van Roten, Bradberry.  All could get paid decently.  If we are smart, we will let these guys go and cash in a few comp picks for 2021.  The only guys I bring back is Bradberry for around 12m and Cockrell for 2-3m.

Then I draft my QB of the future in Round 1, a DT and C/G in Round 2, a S and TE in Round 3, and a G/T in Round 4.  Finish of the draft with a WR, Slot CB, and DT in rounds 5-7.

2020 will be a rough season, but I will head into 2021 with about 10 picks, my franchise QB, and about 50+m in cap.

We have to cut Poe AND restructure KK. With that money, we can find several replacements.

Especially considering they are injured right now.

That could be a option.

Im 99.9999999% certain we will be a 3-4 going forward even with the new staff.  So with 1 DT signed in this scenario.  Youll have you draft 1 DT high (rd 1-2) who can start day 1.

We have to many holes to double dip at DT, so the other starter would have to come via FA.

A Good starting DT will run you around 10 mil min, so that will be every penny saved from cutting Poe

Do we really want to restructure Short again?

Doing it this year hasn't turned out to be such a great idea.

Yeah, I am not in favor of restructuring any of the older players. Either take the hit on the salary or take the hit on the dead cap. The more quickly we can get rid of these contracts, the better.

I'm gonna barf but is it worth it to shop luke for a pick if we stick with the 3-4? He is clearly out of place and frankly, I think we can get a first or second for him right now with the contract remaining.

Depending on the level of "burn it down" we decide to go, I'd say Luke and CMC are probably good candidates for the trading block.

Personally my working assumption is that Luke will be here next year and Rivera will not. Given that Luke is a bonafied generational talent at MLB and very little of our front 7 starting talent is under contract for next year, I would consider it an extremely poor decision if our new HC choose to stick with a 3-4 scheme.

    • The same folks crying about the OL right now were crying about it in 2023 too. We have tied up over 100 million dollars in two interior olinemen alone and we have Taylor Moton inked to a recent extension. We've invested multiple first and second round picks in the offense. We hired an offensive minded head coach. This is an offensive team. The offense needs to produce or people need to be replaced.
    • This is the same place that has ridiculed and blasted Caleb Williams at every opportunity he has his team sitting at 10-4 in the same NFC that the Panthers are competing in. And their division in the NFC North is as or more competitive as our division. Yet from the same people who have very high standards for Williams we get every excuse imaginable for the smallest starting QB in the league even when he and his team continue to disappoint when the pressure is on. You lot aren't any less inconsistent than anyone else.
    • The Panthers are 9th in cap spent on offense this year.  However next season is already a different story  The Panthers as it stands right now will be 18th in cap spent on offense and 8th in cap spent on defense  The Panthers are currently set to spend more on defense next year than they are on offense this season Guys like Jaycee and Moehrig cap numbers take a big jump. Wharton has a massive cap hit   Jaycee Moehrig and Wharton in 2025 The same 3 in 2026 So this same defense as it stands right now will cost more in 2026 than this offense does right now… Got anything else you want to try?
