If you were forced to choose between a fun, family-centric culture or a culture that shows a win at all costs mentality...

I think keeping your nose clean and not being involved in controversy and crime should be a key factor in a normal functioning human being.

I remember Chris Spielman going on a rant about that right after some NFL player got in trouble.

He kept asking "How hard is it to just not get arrested?!"

That’s just crazy talk.

Although to be fair to pro athletes, they are sometimes targeted by individuals seeking to extract things like money from them who are willing to stir up controversy and legal issues when they don’t get their way, so keeping clear of those things can be more of a challenge than it is for you or I.

This is true, but they should know who they're hanging out with.

Without question the Panthers fanbase wants a fuzzy warm feelings family friendly team. Clean cut lunch pale players who are a good example of citizens and fathers. Winning is just not that big of a deal to most Panthers fans. The Panthers players keeping their noses clean and not being involved in controversy or crime is the key factor for many Panthers fans. The reason is because many Panthers fans are fathers with young children and games and events give them family friendly activities. Doesn't matter if the Panthers lose so long as they're not terrible.

Okay. If that's the case, where the fug are those warm and fuzzy, family fans when this team loses? You must have been blind not to see the empty stadium the last few weeks.

"Hey, honey, let's take the kids and go see the Panthers play this weekend. Oh, I know it's gonna cost us about $400, but hey, it's clean, wholesome football where players get concussed, knees get shredded, players curse along the sidelines and they'll get their asses handed to 'em, but what a great family day out, huh?"

GTFO. You win, fans will show.

About a decade or so ago I read the book Pros and Cons, which was an investigative piece that examined criminal behavior in the NFL. One of the points that the authors stressed their investigations revealed is that whenever you see a player flanked at a press conference by a GM or coach and that person is saying “we believe everybody deserves a second chance.”, that incident is almost never their second chance. It’s their 9th chance, or 10th, but the public didn’t hear about the others because they were covered up.

I am no fan of Roger Goodell overall, but I do think that when he became commissioner and started creating real consequences for off field shenanigans, that was the turning point that caused NFL teams to stop continuously sweeping this stuff under the rug, and actually start holding players accountable for their behavior. I think overall this has been to everyone’s benefit, because as Speilman said, if you’re actually trying, how hard is it to just not get arrested?

The rise of social media probably also makes a difference.

You can still do your best to sweep things under the rug, but now there's a mechanism for everybody to lift it up and take a peek at what's under there.

I'm perfectly fine with family like environment, in fact I would probably thrive in it.

However, the company needs to be able to stay in business as well, or the paychecks will just dry up.

Warm fuzzies are fine, but the winning has to be accomplished first, then the fuzzies can come and play.

This team is notorious for thank you contracts and extensions, we almost always keep a player a year too long vs. a year too early.  Time for a change IMO.

That's an easy sentiment to have, but this country also has the highest incarceration rate in the world.

I don't begrudge people being arrested, it happens to a lot of people whether they did anything or not, whether it was a serious offense or something minor.

I don't care if our players get arrested for non-violent or non-serious crimes. fuging up is just part of life and none of us are there at these incidents to judge their actions ourselves.

Good point. Seems like it would definitely be a factor, maybe even bigger than Goodell now that I think about it. Not really trying to give him credit if I don’t  have to.

Which would you choose?

I mean, if the "win at all costs" mentality actually won, would you prefer it to a culture like we've become accustomed to where the team had a great mentor and everyone seemed happy, even if it meant not winning it all?

Whats more important to you?

Would you sacrifice the warm fuzzy family setting for a less embraceable, but more winning culture?

In pro sports, it’s winning

my issue with McDaniels is he has either performed poorly as a head coach and evaluator of talent in Denver and his very poor behavior with Indy

here is a scenario. He is signed here and he signs, god forbid for 5 years.

at end of year two, Bellinchek finally retires and NE comes calling, do you trust him to stay here and finish his contract?.  Do you trust him at all?

i don’t

josh McDaniels is the Lane Kiffin of the NFL
