I've mentioned this before, but you can rebuild while winning some games....mind you, it's a fairly stupid way to do it, but it can be done.

If we were truly going to start from scratch, Cam and Luke are likely gone this offseason, Cam certainly.  We will see what Tep wants to try to accomplish.

Panthers have gone through several major turnovers in their short history, where the overwhelming majority of personnel have been replaced within a couple of seasons.  IIRC two thirds of the roster was gone within a few years of Gettleman's arrival.  I'd expect at least that sort of turnover this time with Rhule, likely more.

Again, it's not the money.

I'd put it this way: If Dan Snyder or Jerry Jones threw 70 million dollars at a "hot name" coach with almost no NFL experience, we'd all be laughing, but not surprised.

And that's the thing: This is the kind of move that it's very easy to imagine someone like Jones or Snyder making.

Really, really hope it works out

Realistically regardless of who he hired, given his deep pockets and his prior statements about sustained success not happening overnight, the contract was likely always gonna be for longer than typical and for pretty hefty cash. If the coach doesn't work out, it's not skin off anyone's nose but Tepper's, and the clear message he's sending here is "I will put my money where my mouth is and plunk down more money than anyone else to fix this team."

I think this is the sort of contract the hire was going to get regardless of who it was, and should be mildly surprising at most.

Teppers money doesnt effect the cap who cares.

True, but human nature would probably make him want to see his relatively long term investment succeed being that he's spent so much money. I don't think that'll be the case with Tepper if Rhule gradually tanks (based on past interviews about mediocrity blah blah blah), but you never know.

Exactly.

It's good to be Big Tepp.

The duration and $$$ amount of this contract are irrelevant...

Rhule is now the coach.

If/when it's not working Big Tepp will make a change, whatever the monetary ramifications are will not be a hindrance (no letting a lame duck coach out his contract just to save the money like Fox).

On the flipside, if it's working great Big Tepp has him locked in at a rate lower than what the Redskins are paying ol' Rowboat.

After Rhule the quality of the remaining candidates fell off quickly.

To paraphrase a former CEO with ties to the area....

....Tepper "just kept laying $1,000,000 bills on the table until Rhule said yes."

Any guesses on the genesis of the original quote?  :shades:

    • The era that you played in, and, more importantly, who you played with actually matters. Honestly, that's why these issues will be debated forever, as it's just difficult to say that this person or that person is better when you're discussing the passage of time. As for me, after Rice, Moss and maybe Megatron and T.O., there's probably a dozen or so guys that can be argued about to the cows come home. Personally, I'm not putting Fitz, Harrison, Johnson, Evans, or especially D-Hop, Jefferson, Chase or Hill definitely in front of Smitty (and Colston ain't even in the discussion). Context and all that stuff actually matters. Things like the triple crown matter.
    • Some of those guys? Yeah honestly you can.  I would 100% take Steve Smith over Larry Fitzgerald, Harrison, even Mike Evans. He is 100% a better player than those guys in his prime. If you look at the numbers Smith is historically under targeted in comparison to his contemporaries. He was only targeted 150 times or more only once in his career. Fitzgerald for example was targeted well above that 9 different seasons. Had Smith played with Peyton, Brady, Greatest Show on Turf, or even with Warner in Arizona he would broken records. His 2008 season was ridiculous accumulating 1400 yards in 13 games on less than 80 receptions. All time he also lost a season due to injury in 04, barely played WR as a rookie. Got robbed of 1k season with Clausen. Thats easily another 1800yds minimum that should have been tacked on to his #s. The only guys I’d say for certain are better than Smith are Rice, Moss, TO, Megatron, Julio Jones, Antonio Brown.
    • I parked in this lot a few times. It would take over and hour to get out of that lot after games. Never again
