Let's formally divide into factions on Matt Rhule

I like others will hope for the best and root for the team. But honestly, who can have an informed opinion when Rhule is in uncharted territory and none of us interviewed him or really know anything about him.

Plus if Cam comes back healthy the consensus will be that if we do well it was due to Cam and if we suck it will Rhule and Hurney's fault.

I'll cheer for him.  Hell, I cheered for Clausen and Carr.  I mean, I'll cheer for anyone to have success that is a Panther.

but first take?

We drastically overpaid for a college football coach who doesn't have a great college resume by the standards we have always judged college coaches of the past that have made the jump.   Carroll? Saban? Kelly?  Those dudes won or competed for National Championships.  Powerhouses.   Baylor went 0-11 vs the top 25.

I mean, he could be great.   When we drafted Steve Smith I didn't think much of it either.

You talk a lot about talent issues/injuries in the nfl. And that being a big reason for Ron’s failed seasons. I think by comparison you can use that same line of thinking for Rhule. He took recruits that weren’t his own and recruited players that weren’t tops in the nation but had measurables and coached them up to 10 win and 11 win seasons from 10 to 11 losses a season. That is extremely impressive.

this is obviously a huge risk hire and the amount of money and years is kind of scary how all in Tepper is on this guy who has never really coached in the nfl. It has the capacity to blow up majorly because history tells us it’s rare for college coaches to have success, especially sustained success which is Tepper a goal, in the NFL. I’ll be rooting for this guys success hard. Seems like a great guy even if I don’t think the way he delivers his message will win over players. I hope I’m wrong.

also, I went over to saints and falcons forum to hear opinions. Those who don’t really know him are laughing their asses off we just gave this dude with a .500 college average 60 million. Others who know the Baylor program and/or are Baylor fans are pretty upset he’s in our division now. Said he’s a hell of a coach and will bring us success earlier than fans think.

yeah, I mean you never know in life.

present day, best coach in college football and program in college is Clemson.  Dabo was a joke hire per most.  A laughing stock.

best coach in the NFL? Belichick.  New England was landing backflips when the bumbling Browns coach landed.

Only time will tell on Rhule.

Dabo kind of is a joke. He’s great at recruiting. Aren’t those coordinators some of the highest paid in the NCAA? I guess there’s something to be said about having a personality to attract players and coaches though but I don’t see him as some great football mind.

I think it'll either be the best thing to ever happen to this franchise or the worst thing to ever happen to this franchise. Tepper swung for the fences and I appreciate that, but let's not pretend this doesn't come with a fugload of risk.

Tepper got a boner for this guy, threw so much money at him he couldn't say no, and let's see what happens.

what is the function of a HC?

Dabo is the best in coach in college football right now.  Not really a debate IMO.   And no, I wouldn't call him a great X and O guy.   Don't think you need your HC being that guy.

but Dabo turned Clemson into a juggernaut.  Without Dabo….Clemson would still just be a Bowden era team.  Dabo a rare find.    Unique coach that doesn't really compare.

Dabo is a great builder. great recruiter.  great motivator.  great manager of people.   He is a great college HC.

He would be a train wreck as a NFL coach.

He would not translate to the nfl, I know that for sure.

I'm with the "wait and see" crowd. I don't love the hire, I don't hate the hire. Conversely, I won't be quick to jump all over him for the smallest thing nor be quick to furiously fellate him digitally(not with fingers) for some small or quick successes. In it for presumably the long haul. So let's see how it worked out.

Now, that said everyone can go ahead and prep yourselves for the small McCarthy contingent to be VERY vocal when the Cowboys are likely much better than us next season.....

He's not a great football mind but he motivates his players well and he knows enough to put the best coaches around himself. It helps that he was able to sell Clemson on spending a bunch of money to attract and retain top assistants. He will get the Belichick and Saban effect the longer the success lasts(everyone hires all their coaches away and it ruins their continuity).
