Rhule decided he didn't need a former head coach on staff

I don’t buy it, but it’s not my staff. I guess let me put it this way: this is exactly the opposite of how I would build an NFL staff, if I was a head coach. It may work wonders, but keep this in mind: the staff is vastly less experienced at the NFL level than Chip Kelly’s Eagles staff was.

Did he fail because of staff experience or because of a gimmick offense and not being a leader?

This whole experiment is going to be a raving success or an absolutely abysmal failure. I honestly don't see any room for gray area in between. It's either going to really work or it really won't.

Theres plenty of room for gray area. Now if you are only referring to fan response then sure. This fanbase feels entitled to super Bowls and will call any season without winning one  failure.

He failed because his style of doing things just doesn't work on millionaires.  And the fact that he's a dick doesn't help matters.

Exactly. Nobody said he failed because he didn't have nfl experience. Now if players start saying Rhule is hard to play for it might be relevant. Never heard anything to suggest hed not get along with his players. That's his forte it seems

I can see how it would be a mistake for Rivera to not have a former head coach on his initial staff because Rivera had never held the position of head coach before. Matt Rhule, on the other hand, has been a head coach for 7 years at the collegiate level, whereas Rivera had only been a position coach and a coordinator at the NFL level.

but I get what Rhule means with his response to Joe Person's question. which is the first question asked in this video, for the record

https://www.panthers.com/video/rhule-we-have-a-really-good-plan

the two people he mentions, Pat Meyer (5 yrs, including I think 2 as "defensive run game coordinator") and Jason Simmons (9 yrs, including 2 as a more-or-less "defensive pass game coordinator" and 2 as an assistant coordinator), do have a decent amount of experience. not sure there's much to be gained by demanding a level of experience higher than 5 and 9 years respectively, particularly with the pace of how the game has evolved in recent years.

as a head coach in the NFL, his most challenging game-day issues will involve heavy delegation to staff anyways. it's more about taking the steps during the week, and having a basic understanding of time management and challenges, so that you can be decisive on game day. and in that sense Rhule is in a different place coming into his first NFL head gig vs Rivera.

Getting the definite feeling that, comparatively, Tepper/Rivera was a team who were diving from the 1m spring board into the Diving Pool of Suck.

But Tepper/Rhule?  Starting to get antsy that this combo just might be diving into the Diving Pool of Suck from the 10m Platform.

Interesting how in football, they make such a fuss about prior coaching experience (or lack thereof), but in just about every other walk in life we're okay with an outsider coming in and making a go... (politicians, start ups, CEOs, etc) If you're putting a decent product out on the field, I'm less concerned with the staff and how they got there.

I just hope he has the ability to learn from his failures. I suspect they are going to be early and often with the Panthers.

I can't see how they are not going to be. We are devoid of talent and cap. I just wish we had a better GM to steer this ship in the right direction. I think Rhule is a good leader of men and will keep good coaches around him but a huge transition is ahead. The NFL and the NCAA is totally different. Maybe his insights will be a fresh start or it could be disastrous. Time will tell.

I don't think it is completely insane for us to be a competitive team this season. But, the barrel of unknowns is overflowing. Could we retool to be a modestly successful team? Yes. Is that likely? I don't think so.

As you said, the lack of a competent GM is the thing that makes a quick turnaround so completely unlikely, IMO. Frankly, it makes the chance of really any sort of turnaround pretty unlikely.

If a few winning seasons out of 10 is what your looking for then Hurney can do that. Actually he has a proven track record of that.
