The Remnant

Players who were on the 2015 roster that are still connected to the Panthers as of this moment...

DE Mario Addison (free agent)
S Tre Boston (free agent)
K Graham Gano
LS J.J. Jansen
DT Kyle Love (free agent)
QB Cam Newton
DT Kawann Short
LB Shaq Thompson
T Darryl Williams (free agent)

A few look to be safe (Thompson obviously, probably Short) but overall the list is pretty likely to get shorter within the next few weeks.

I don't think anybody will be too surprised at this point if none of the free agents are back. Of course there's the Newton question, and others are of somewhat indefinite status (notably Gano).

So how many will still be around come September?

Shaq is already signed, sealed and delivered. Beyond that: JJ Jansen is a lock. Probably Tre Boston will be back and a very slight chance for Mario. KK may be back just because he's under contract and we may well pick up a DT in the first round.

Cam... there's so much out there hanging over the decision-making process. Is he healthy, is he capable, is he back to SuperCam? Really, who knows?

I think Cam will flash, have some highlight reel moments, but his body has changed now.  He is still a Ferrari, just one with bondo and high mileage that has spent a lot of time in the shop lately.  Is he worth the payments?  Are you tired of being left on the side of the road for the past 2 years as AAA bails you out?  Or do you think this mechanic fixed our Ferrari so that it will be able to reach the finish line for the first time in years?

That Super Bowl roster was never built for the long term. Most of those starters from that year are out of the league and the few that are still in the league are past their prime.

It was the most amazing year in our franchise history, but now is just a distant memory.

That year the stars aligned. Everyone hit their prime that season.

When I was a kid, my Dad had a mid-1960s Jaguar XKE. Beautiful car -- convertible, British racing green, fast as anything on the road, handled like a dream.

Went through more oil than gas, spending more time in the shop than on the roads.

I still love that car in memory, but in reality, I understand why he just threw up his hands and sold it to the first sucker who'd buy it.

And you can see the parallels to Cam.

    • this     I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who will run up their blood pressure to get to the grocery store 30 seconds faster or are racing to get to work like it won’t be there at 8:02.   The only thing I’ve ever done that I think added more years to my life besides quitting smoking, was to learn to go with the flow behind the wheel.
    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
