REPORT: Panthers will not tank, working more of a mixed reboot than total rebuild.

Brother its already burnt down.  Hurney made sure of that.

In case you havent noticed our roster is lacking  double digit starters.

It is not because free agency and the draft are not complete. Again, your take may well end up being correct but it is premature to say that will happen.

Yeah, that is why I am so heavily invested in Plan A. I cannot fathom why people are so excited about the prospect of drafting a new QB. That has been really, really sketchy for us historically. Outside the top 5, it gets even more sketchy.

I am not looking forward to trying to find a new franchise QB, I am dreading the prospect of trying and then NOT finding him on the first attempt.

I wouldn’t invest so heavily in that because it’s likely just setting up to be disappointed. I’ve had high expectations for the team in recent years and now am looking at it with the mindset that we’re gonna suck bad for a few years before it hopefully gets good again. If it turns out better and we keep Cam and compete this year, then great. But I’m not counting on it.

It continues to amaze me that so many people on this board still believe that Hurney has the final say on any player acquisition/disposition in the draft, FA or otherwise.  He’s there to accumulate/filter/advise the info for Rhule, who will make the decisions. Apparently he’s finished with his team analysis and believes he can reboot “on the fly” without tearing everything down.  If that’s the case it’ll good news for Cam staying.

I want to believe this but I havent read or heard anything that resembles this.

I'm investing in Cam heavily because it's really the only shot at hope for the future of the franchise that I can grasp at. Without him returning to form, it's just a sea of uncertainty. I don't look forward to that uncertainty, I dread it because I simply do not have faith in the leadership of this organization currently. That may change but I haven't seen ample reason to push forward trusting that Tepper, Hurney or Rhule "got this."

Makes total sense.  All the tank rhetoric was preposterous from the start and Cam sure isn't going to want to go through something like that.  I look forward to seeing what Team Marty/Rhule/Tepper put together and I'm optimistic!  8-8 would be a step in the right direction and a natural waypoint on this journey Tepper is taking us on.

That's good to hear. A mixed reboot is almost exactly what '17 Rams, Niners & Bills have done. Result? Playoff teams & SB trips. Still no SB ring but you get the picture.

A HUGE tank is similar to what the Browns, Jets & Dolphins have been doing for years. Any improvement so far? Nada.

Umm, this is pretty funny. They 2017 Rams are one of your retooling examples? They were 4-12 in 2016 and before 2017, they had 10 straight seasons of 7 or fewer wins. They didn’t have a single .500 season and yet you call them a retooling? The only difference between the Rams, 49ers and Bills and the Browns, Jets and Dolphins is that the former teams hit on some of their high draft picks and also hired competent coaches. Also, with 5 first round picks and 4 seconds this year and next, don’t be shocked to see Miami’s tank work. They’ve got the ammo, will they use it.

It’s hysterical the motions people jump through here to act like we aren’t fully rebuilding or that scary word, tanking. Using teams that drafted top 5, 10 and 15 for years and finally turned it around and aren’t really any different than the teams that picked in the same spots and didn’t turn it around.

If Marty gets off his ass and drafts well for a change and Rhule is like McVay, McDermott and Shanahan, we’ll be fine. If not we’ll be the Browns. It has nothing to do with building a losing culture by tanking. It has everything to do with good drafts and a good coach.

How we rebooting with limited capspace and letting our 2nd best defensive player walk in FA?

We have to many holes to reboot quite simply.

We didn’t “let” him walk.  We made it known we want him here.  He chose to test the market.  He may still sign here...never know.

    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
