Panthers S Colin Jones

Honestly, he's been a good role player for us for a long number of years. That being said, you can really only remain on a team as a special teams specialist for so long.

There's going to be younger guys who need a roster spot to develop, who can do it for cheaper vet minimums. In our rebuild/reboot, those are the kind of guys Rhule is going to be recruiting and looking to build around. Jones was looking at going into training camp and having to compete with other safeties and linebackers for his spot... young, hungry players.

Jones can also probably find a landing spot in either Washington or Buffalo and run out a couple more years. He has skills and a lot of knowledge that's valuable, either to a contending team like Buffalo or one where a coach is looking to surround himself with many familiar faces (Washington).

Good luck to him, thanks for all the games.

Everyone's going to hate on him here because he's a mediocre safety, but he's not a safety, he's a special teamer. Usually a special teamer is either your fifth or sixth receiver or some sort of backup secondary player, and we've had to pressgang into service because of awful personnel decisions in our secondary. As a special teamer, he was solid and that's basically all you can ask for. Hopefully we don't have to deal with this situation in the future.

No we hate on him because he's everything you described but was also a coach favorite that pushed out/kept us from improving both on special teams and backup safety.

...and then, in the end, he wanted to act like it was our fault, lol.

Evidently he was a player favorite, given he's the special teams captain.

Pretty sure that a 32yr old special teams guy doesn't have a whole lot of opportunities to get a ring, so I could understand if he thinks he has a chance to get picked up by a team with a better chance than a retooling Panthers. I could also see him taking a shot with a team with coaching staff that he's familiar with (should he end up in Washington or Buffalo).

    • lol well that kinda ended up working out in the end, even though I still don't have my jersey yet. Was supposed to ship by tomorrow this time, but just got another email saying it was delayed another 3 weeks and because it's been delayed so long, I had to tell them to keep the order or cancel it, but gave me a 25% off my next order as an apology. Well, my original fear came true and they are now selling the FUSE version (but still not the Blue unfortunately) before the one I ordered was ever shipped. But that's awesome, because I was able to use that coupon to order the FUSE instead and then cancelled the original order.  So I got the jersey I wanted for only $6.30 more than the crappier version costs, and it also says it will be shipped immediately and get here early next week, or 2 weeks before the other was now supposed to be shipped out.
    • I've watched this and think we are well underway.  Believe it or not, Bryce is a big part of this.  The way he bounced back with such grace.  And we've got a lot of young players who want to make their mark, Dave is giving them an opportunity.  I loved our draft.  I like the number of guys we brought in, and they will help build the culture we want under Dave.  We're getting closer, and I think we'll see more wins this year than most of the board. The right culture breeds winning, and winning builds the right culture.  Imho, it's coming.
    • As others have said it's both. One creates the other. But it also takes time sometimes years. And there have been teams lately with new car smell coaching staffs that looked like they were putting it together quickly but things came crashing back down to Earth. Sustainability is the key. For that to happen the meddling of our owners has to stop and they cannot be tempted to return to their ways over any bump in the road either.
