Get it in now!! Go on record with your intial thought on the draft...

WOW!!

Grading a draft immediately at its conclusion is based on a couple things: did you maximize value at your picks, address areas of need, and if applicable, get good value on trades.

As far as value, we did a much better job than we typically have. Hard to know for sure but based on consensus boards, people we picked were unlikely going to be there much longer for the most part, ignoring the last couple rounds where all the picks are crapshoots with everyone's boards all over the place. No gripes here.

Need? We went all in on defense which was appropriate since we could barely field half a defense before the draft. We didn't even pick a single luxury position. Unrealistic with all of our holes to fill all of them but we covered a bunch. Check here.

We only made one trade and I would call it fine. We didn't "win" in the traditional sense but what we gave up was a low value pick to move up. Plus we ultimately got to pick a guy who very possibly wouldn't have been there at our original pick given a team ultimately picked a safety one pick before our original.

1st. ..pick.. Derrick Brown, DT Auburn  safe pick/need  Not my choice, but still a worthy selection

2nd .. pick.. Yetur Gross-Matos DE PSU From here on I've never heard or seen a single play of anyone drafted

2nd pick part 2.   Chinn-sanity could be a great nickname, McNutt level.

4th ... This one made a lot of folks jimmy stir, so I guess that's good?

5th ... Betcha cant have just one?

6th ... 6'1 330? If he can dance like Raji he might be my new fave.

7th .  An offensive player here would just look dumb, toss a dart at the DB big board and see what happens.

  • Good pick, possibly great. Just not what I "wanted".
  • Really excited to butcher YGM's name and look like im trying not to fart at the same time.
  • It was pick 3 that I began to see a pattern emerge, but it wasn't quite clear.
  • As Pride was selected I grew even more confident in my previously mentioned hypothesis.
  • After Rhule got his dancing bear from Baylor in the 6th, I was ready to declare my all Defense draft hypothesis a theory.
  • One more Defensive selection would cement my theory as law.... aaaand its a DB.
  • Boom 7 rounds 7 players. All D, all the time.

Its exactly the kind of draft I wanted, but the opposite side of the ball.  Oh well, I guess that's next year's draft.

I think it was a great draft and honestly a refreshing approach. I wouldn’t be surprised if we go all offense next year.

I think it actually makes more sense to double dip on one side of the ball. You can immediately improve one unit of the team while also increasing the chances of that unit being above average if not top 10. That unit then masks the other deficiencies of the team.  KK, Burns, and Brown should immediately be effective. Then add Yetur, Efe, and the rest and we might have something that echos 2013 on the line.

I’m very excited to have a safety with legit  raw talent. We haven’t had a cornerstone safety since Mike Minter. That will be huge to pair with Boston who is decent. I for one also believe Rhule will get the best out of Donte Jackson. So I think the defense will be surprisingly strong next year.

I loved it. Look to be competitive, but not do anything stupid to ruin your future. D-line looks to be very interesting. Secondary is a little intriguing. With Chinn, you have a guy who takes your need away to have three LBs. He is a great piece. Like the hands of Robinson and the 7th rounder. Like Roy as a situational player. Never know what we could do during pre-season cuts. I feel good about the future......and a surprisingly decent about this year. Like the way Rhule is building.

I sense a lot of 3-safety looks.

I completely agree with this. I seen a few people on here saying they thought Chinn would challenge Burris/Boston for a spot. But honestly, I could see him being a LB/SS/NB. Whatever is needed for the scheme, plug him in. Super excited to see how the defense is ran.

My predictions.....

1. Derrick Brown - 9+ year NFL player, 3 time Pro Bowler.

2. Yetur Gross-Matos - multi-year starter for us. Solid player.

3. Jeremy Chinn - solid contributor.

4. Troy Pride Jr. - rotational player, does not make it to a second contract here.

5. Kenny Robinson - multi-year starter in the NFL.

6. Bravvion Roy - NFL journeyman and valuable rotational player.

7. Stantley Thomas-Oliver III - out of the league in less than the average NFL career(currently ~3.3 seasons)

I figured one of these two safeties will end up being a player for us and he looks a lot like a guy that is a multi-year starter in the league.

Chinn has a much higher bust potential. He is the classic high ceiling, low floor player

Cant really argue with this.  Solid b+ to A grade.  Filled out some positions of need.  It will be interesting to see how this draft style affects the overall roster and quality of it by leaning on all defense.  We are going to have the same type of holes on the oline after 2020.

It looks like we all think we nailed it. We tend to do this every other draft year.

Nailed it?  No.  But it's what they needed to do to bolster the defense.  They are not done with it by a long shot but it's a good start.  This team is about 10 decent starter quality players away from competing for the playoffs.  If they are lucky they just got 4 of them, but it's more than likely just 2 and some depth.  Fans over value their own teams players.
