Person “Rhule was open to and eager to trade down in first”

Starting at the 6 minute mark:
On a WFNZ interview Joe Person mentioned “Rhule was open to and eager to trade down into somewhere in the teens to add more picks”. He then mentioned Hurney said once Brown was available at 7 Hurney said we’re not moving, here’s our guy. He clarified that Rhule obviously liked Brown too but would have been more open to trading down than Hurney was at that point.

8:05 mark of the interview, Bailey ask him if this draft changes anything what they had been hearing this being a draft with Rhule running the show. Person clarifies that was talk from sources around the league but never got the sense and in fact got the opposite from sources inside the Panthers building. Person said he even asked Hurney about it (not specifically leaving to join Rivers and run the skins). Said Hurney genuinely mentioned he and Rhule worked great together from the start and even through the draft and it was easy to get that sense. He also said let’s not forget how highly Tepper thinks of Hurney and that it’s real, he’s always heard Tepper holds him in a high regard.

My person thoughts:

To me,  after reading all the post draft presser transcripts, it does seem that Rhule and Hurney have a pretty good working relationship together. Person confirms it in this interview. Rhule and Hurney have both gone out of there way to compliment each other and mention it.  Hurney did flex has final say on the first round pick but I don’t think Rhule was opposed to the pick either. I think he basically conceded that he trusted Hurney to make the right decision, but would have supported and been on board if the right trade down offer occurred. Basically either scenario was a win once Brown Became available at 7.

I know Rodrique has reported he doesn’t have a long term deal in place to remain the GM, however the owner seems to legitimately like him and believe  in him. Hurney is the one who pounded the table for Rhule, without even getting to the Josh McDaniels interview and after already interviewing McCarthy. We made a huge commitment to Rhule and I can’t discount that Hurney seemed to be the driving force behind it. No way Tepper entrust that kind of influence into somebody he doesn’t trust himself. Just too much evidence to me, that unless something changes, he’s the guy Rhule and Tepper want to be the GM for a while, so anyone who was hoping to see him fired after the draft will likely be disappointed.

I still can see a scenario where Hurney stays on with the organization outside of the GM capacity.  Rhule assumes the GM role or we hire an outside guy.   Tepper has the money to create a 'special' job title for Marty.

Hurney and Rhule might be a good pairing. Rhule seems like a more freewheeling, all doors remain open kind of guy and while that may be good, he's green in the NFL draft. Hurney has steady experience to know when to stay tight, especially in Round 1. I think Rhule has a plan and he just needs help making that happen. I think Hurney can deliver for him but both need to stay in their lanes.

I doubt trading back would have been the right move anyway. If nothing else, if Hurney was convinced Brown was the pick we needed to make, given his track record in the first round, who are we to question him at this point? Also, there was no market for trading up into the top 10 this year. Detroit and the Giants were both aggressively trying to trade back and couldn't find a suitable deal. It was a buyer's market. We would have had to take a crap deal and then possibly miss out on a top prospect. Once Herbert went at 6, the market in trading back diminished even more, with Love not coming off the board till 26.

Our draft focus was clearly defense. What blue chip defensive prospect would we have gotten in the teens? San Francisco wanted Kinlaw and were sitting at 13. Maybe we get the Falcons to move up to 7 for Henderson, and then who do we take at 16? At that point Jax takes Brown and SF takes Kinlaw again. Who does that leave? Chaisson? Reach for a corner like the Falcons did? Would you rather have Chaisson and an extra 3rd or Brown? Give me Brown

It's just amusing how many people think Rhule was in charge and Marty was just a puppet

All I had to see was Rhule entertaining his kids on the broadcast and Hurney on the phone pacing back and forth. That told the whole story.

I am one of the biggest Hurney detractors here but I can 100% live with him being a part of the committee rather than being the primary decision maker. Hurney does have a rare attribute to be able to work with damn near anyone and have a very positive professional and personal relationship afterwards. Might just be the type that is better as part of a team rather than leading it.

Many other GMs and coaches had their kids on the video and I am pretty sure Hurney doesn't have young kids to entertain at his age. There is absolutely nothing you can get from that.

    • okay I found this and it sounds like my hopes for the first surgery being not such a great job seems like it could be actual reality.  I only hoped because that would give a better chance for recovery and ia a possible scenario so I just thought it could be possible. Had no real evidence of it. But I’ll be damned.    This is a detailed report of Brooks’ surgery and the condition of his knee after the failed repair.     https://x.com/jmthrivept/status/2055743129408704806?s= Sparked by some very good questions by @CoachspeakIndex, here’s some info on Jonathon Brooks: 1. Speculation that the first graft/ACLR by Dr. Cooper didn’t “take” or at least was too lax, leading to failure and re-tear. Brooks dealt with issues cutting, progressing in his rehab into the early stages of 2024 and then re-tore it late 2024, requiring a second ACLR in January 2025 (essentially revision). Notably, CAR prolonged Brooks’ rehab process through Sept-Oct due to issues progressing into the next stages of rehab. 2. Second surgery performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who has extensive experience with revisions. He did a double bundle technique, harvesting graft from Brooks’ left patellar tendon and a strip of his right IT Band (his right patellar tendon had been utilized for the prior graft in 2023. The double bundle technique significantly increases rotational stability of the knee, leading to a stronger and more secure graft/reconstruction. Also to note, Brooks’ surgery wasn’t significantly delayed, meaning that the tunnels from his prior ACLR were in good shape and they didn’t need to perform bone grafts to fill in (would have delayed 2nd surgery by 5-6 months). Essentially, reading the tea leaves tells me that everything else except for the graft itself was still in good quality within his knee. Good sign for future.  3. Typically, you see a performance increase anywhere from 16-20 months post-revision. Brooks will be ~21 months out from his second surgery by the time Week 1 hits. His knee should be more stable and stronger this time around, with adequate time for healing and return to all movement patterns. I’m not viewing this situation as a typical “Player __ had TWO ACL tears, he’s cooked” situation. Rather, I’m viewing it as the first procedure failed, but the second procedure is significantly stronger and should allow him to return to form this time around. I don’t know why it posted as a link but there it is.
    • Jackie, any more reps tomorrow, or is that it for this session?  thanks for the work
    • How can you say they aren’t trying to win now with all the moves made in free agency? Or is trading first round picks the only way to be win now? I’d be fine never trading another first round pick again, win now be damned.
