NFL to give players option to opt out for 2020

At this point, cancel the Fall and push the season to the Spring in the hopes of a "real" season. Have some QB challenges/skill challenges during the Fall to give us something and still have something to throw at TV networks.

Going to have to get somewhat creative to save the cap from crashing if a lot of players take advantage of this and opt out.  Let's get weird...no draft, let rookies sing as FAs after an April/May Super Bowl.  Summer free agency.  Back to a normal start time next year with one to no preseason games to give extra rest time.

Deaths are finally under control and its currently less lethal than a coconut. It could evolve into a more dangerous version, in a few areas it already has.

The giant issue is no one knows the long term effects. I know the window for NFL players to make great money is small, could see more than a few opt out. If I already had 30 million and old, peace out. It would be also hard for the $500,000 guys too.

I believe they should give the same option to coaches and anyone employed by the team.

Best possible year this could happen to us as a franchise in all honesty.  If the Panthers play, I will watch as I always have, but I have not paid my PSL invoice for the first time in 15 years b/c of the uncertainty at the state of the team from a roster standpoint.

I believe Matt Rhule was the right hire for the long-term, and as bad as it hurts me, I think moving on from Cam was the best move provided we can find the next franchise QB in short order.  But this year is going to be bad from a record standpoint no matter what (and honestly the worse, the better)

If half the Panthers sit out this year and/or there is a shortened/cancelled season, the better for us long-term.  Of all the franchises, this timing is as good for us as anyone.  My preference is to have a season, potentially a shortened one so that we can have a bad enough record to potentially get a top QB.

The idea of aging Brees, Brady, & Ryan another year while giving our young defense time to develop is a good thing.

In any other year, this offseason would be excruciating to me in terms of feeling like the team is behind the curve with a new coaching staff, no OTA's, etc.  It doesn't bother me in the least this year.

Beyond that, Covid is going to wreak havoc on competitive balance if a significant amount of players on one team comes down with it at a given time.  I don't know how Vegas or fantasy is going to respond yet either.

I'm looking forward to the chaos...  as a team, we have absolutely nothing to lose.

There are many coaches in the 50's & 60's, and probably more than a few in their 70's.  This is a legitimate concern.

Bruce Arians immediately comes to mind.  These guys are way more at risk than the average player.

Most of them have HBP and type 2 diabetes. Some of the other workers could fall in that too- bus drivers, janitors, cooks, scouts, training staff, etc. NFL just isnt convid sport friendly. I still feel they should delay the start, most feel a vaccine could be ready early December, idk. Just too many factors involved, unlike golf or tennis.

If they opt out do they still get their contract pay?

I’d have to guess no. If they can opt out and still get paid then everyone is going to opt out. Why risk injury if you don’t have to?

We've got 41 million in dead money this year, most in the NFL.  So our shot at competing was pretty low anyhow.  If players opt out, we might stand a chance.

One team that will really be hurt by a lost season is the Saints.  That Brees contract is going to have to be paid and he might be looking at retirement.

I want to watch football but it really does benefit us for there not to be a season. Brees and Brady don't get any younger.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
