I haven’t been able to opt out of work since March. Neither has my wife who works in childcare. Unfortunately.

You and everyone else absolutely could opt out of your respective jobs/careers in the name of health but are either either unable or unwilling to weather the financial and/or professional outcomes of such a decision. These guys are. Right or wrong, fair or not, that's the reality and it seems unreasonable to support athletes in normal situations and then condemn them for being able to make this type of decision.

I don't say that in any condescending or disparaging spirit and certainly am grateful for to those who have found themselves at risk in order to keep societal function at some semblance of 'normal'. It's objectively unfortunate that there are people, perhaps yourselves included, who are in a position they aren't comfortable being in for the sake of survival.

With respect to this thread topic I trust that the athletes are making the best decision for them. Other leagues are having success so perhaps any frustration should be directed at sports leadership that aren't able or willing to find a similar solution.

It’s not even ignorance, it’s just plain stupidity. I’m half way pulling for football to be cancelled because it’s going to drive snowflakes like him and EZUPantherfan and Bull123 into rage

You can opt out. You just can't afford to.  If people are in a financial situation where they can opt out and prevent more spread then great.  I respect that. If you perform an important job but don't make enough to stop working I respect that as well.  I don't respect the ignorance that can't differentiate.

The problem is that you guys are thinking individualism instead of United.  You say this person or that person could opt out.  Well let's scale that up and say everybody opts out.  Are we just going to enter a Mad Maxx situation then?  Discipline, look it up people.

Each situation is different. No idea if the players opting out live with high at-risk people, mate could be peggars, and you yourself could be a high risk medical case.

I’m gonna bet that covid will be around next season and the season after that as well. Maybe we wont freak out over it 12 months from now because it won’t be as new. An NFL player is at ~0 risk of having anything more than a very mild illness.

0% is a bold statement since we already know thats not true from Von Miller

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2020/05/13/von-miller-coronavirus-experience-nfl-season/

Q: What was the worst part for you?

A: Not being able to breathe. I got asthma, but it was past the asthma attack — like my lungs were constricting. My asthma nebulizer helped, but it still didn’t feel like it was supposed to. That was the most frightening part. Just going to sleep knowing that my oxygen level could drop and I could wake up and have to go to the hospital.

Mild illness or not, the teams are breading grounds for it during a pandemic.  And thats the biggest issue.

this part makes no sense to me personally, but some younger people actually want to be around their family.  its weird i know, but i have to accept it.

We just may be heading towards Dystopia between the increasing & already large economic gap in the U.S. and systematic destruction of the environment! Automation and AI is only increasing exponentially. The Fourth Industrial Revolution is real! If humanity fails to adapt, then society will gradually degrade and crumble.

The players know they are succeptable.

“We are not invincible, and as recent reports have shown, we certainly aren’t immune to this virus,” Tretter wrote in his letter. “Underlying conditions like high (body mass index), asthma and sleep apnea are all associated with a higher risk of developing severe symptoms and complications when infected with COVID-19 (the disease caused by the virus). Those conditions are widespread across the league.

Did you just equate an athlete that has the job of entertaining people opting out to a post apocalyptic scenario???

You do realize how objectively insane that is, right?

    • 1st period was a Masterclass on defense by both teams. About time for the Canes let’s keep it up.
    • Yes, it tells me they’ve improved significantly from sitting at what, 30-31st in the league on the PP to 11th now.
    • I wanted someone to hire him so we got the picks, but I'm also not upset that he'll now be back. I genuinely don't understand why so many fans on here dislike him so much.  No, he's not perfect and made some mistakes this year, especially at the end of the playoff game and going so soft in coverage on the final drive. But considering this place torched him all offseason for us having the "worst defense in NFL history" last year.  Said in the whole pre-draft process how we had to go defense in round 1 because of it and then complained the rest of the offseason that we didn't do enough to improve the defensive roster. How do people say all that about the defense and then complain when he turned that same unit into a pretty respectable defense this year.  They were really the only reason we were in a lot of games for most of the season, as the middle part of the season they really stepped up and were playing like one of the better defenses in the league. I don't see any reason we can't improve even more next year if we spend another offseason focusing on adding pieces on that side of the ball, which we should be able to do with our draft picks and cap space. We had the historically worst defense ever last year and people are upset because we weren't the 85 Bears this year, make it make sense.
