Why are we not talking about a possible next GM?

Hurney is eternal, but his contract is set to expire after this season. I know he has top level blackmail, but it seems kind of odd that he hasn't been resigned. Will Tepper do the right thing for once?

What's the point? Unless & when Tepper decides to fire him, it's not even worth discussing.

His contract doesn't expire until July, meaning that he has at least one more draft and free agency period coming. Throw in that Joe Person has suggested David Tepper might be inclined to give him a one-year extension due to the "extenuating circumstances" of this season.

My personal hope is that Marty "retires" this offseason but it's hard to say with Tepper.

Since the GM is not a cap figure--I hope Tepper uses his wallet and out pays another team for an established winner.

I still don't know why Hurney has been kept around so long by Tepper, but I don't think he's ever truly been in his long-term plans as GM.  I could see Hurney remaining with the team next year in an advisory kind of role or whatever, which maybe is why he hasn't been fired or extended, but I doubt he'll be the general manager.

Pretty much. No one can figure this situation out but Tepper. 98.6% of the Huddle would have canned him by now. 26.8% of the Huddle would have replaced him with a toaster and considered it an improvement.

My hope is Tepper is waiting for a really good replacement to free up. No use replacing an average Hurney with another average GM.

Money doesn’t matter if Ruhle has complete control. Until he decides to give that up, if he even should, no new GM will matter.

Tepper has at least (unintentionally) given some indication that he might understand Marty isn't a suitable GM. His "let's not give him that big a compliment" comment and the discussion that the GM job was "too big for one man" are possible clues.

He definitely seems to understand that Marty is weak in the pro personnel department. That's why he would said to be looking for an assistant GM with that kind of background. Of course, the search kind of fizzled when it appeared leadership didn't understand the rules and kept getting denied permission.

Hurney hasn’t produced a playoff team since 2008. Removing the Gettleman years, Hurney is going on 7 seasons without a playoff appearance while being GM (2009-2012, 2018-2020)

2013-2017 will count as Gettleman seasons. Despite being fire before the 2017 season, Gettleman drafted and built that team.

If the team starts showing life on the defensive front (pun intended), Hurney may get another opportunity to carry on. If not, I think Tepper will definitely hire someone else.

Well he doesn't actually have to fire him since his contract is up after the year... Until we see a new deal we can assume that he'll be gone come 2021.

If you want to talk candidates, my favorites are Saints Assistant GM Jeff Ireland and Pro Personnel Director Terry Fontenot.

Serious candidates with former Panther connections are Seahawks Co-Director of Pro Personnel Trent Kirchner and Titans Vice President of Player Personnel Ryan Cowden. And of course, there's the possible option of Kevin Colbert if that pans out.

But right now, I'd probably say the clubhouse favorite is in-house candidate Pat Stewart. He doesn't necessarily have the kind of resumé some of the other candidates have, but he's got something that might be more important. Specifically, a connection to Matt Rhule. He and Rhule were together at both Temple and Western Carolina for the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on Stewart.
