Carolina Panthers Defensive Turnaround

Varking

Recommended Posts

Through 5 weeks of football, we are:

*12th in Points Per Game at 23.6. We were 31st last year.
*25th in Rushing Yards Per Game at 133.4. We were 29th last year.

*4th in Passing Yards Per Game at 222.2. We were 13th last year.
*14th in Total Yards Per Game.We were 23rd last year.

EDIT: I’d like to add that last year only two teams were averaging 29 or more points a game last year. Right now there are 10 teams doing that. Offense is up across the board but our young defense has improved despite the league trends.

Panthers needed at least 3 rookies to make an impact as defensive starters and they got it.

Friggin amazing.

It’s crazy to think we lost Bradberry and Luke, drafted 7 defensive players, signed Douglas like 4 minutes before the season started off the trash heap and had a new staff trying to learn these NFL players and these have been the early results.

With a truncated off-season, abbreviated training camp, and no preseason.

And offenses getting away with holding all over and scoring being up all over the league. Last year two teams were at 29+ points a game. This year it’s 10 so far and a few are close to 40 points a game.

Scoring is up because holding calls are WAY down. Falcons were holding on literally every running play. Todd Gurley’s TD run gets called back in years past

The fact our defense is still hanging in there despite getting held a lot is a positive sign

Yeah I added this after an edit to the OP. Scoring is up across the league a lot because offenses aren’t being penalized but our numbers are still better now than they were last year. It speaks volumes about the coaching. It also speaks highly of our offense staying on the field more and having less three an outs or multiple turnover games like our offense last year suffered from. Our defense doesn’t get as tired so quickly.

Have we found a gem in Snow? I'm not going to lie, I did not like the Snow hire. Thought there were better DC options out there. But Rhule obviously knows wtf he's doing and believed in his guy from the start. Snow has this young defense playing fast. Deserves a TON of credit for this turnaround. It speaks volumes that Snow has FAR less talent than Rivera did last year, and still has the better defense.

Lack of holding calls will do that

Snow also attributes scoring due to lack of loud home fields

    • This is from 5 months ago. It was one or the other. Trade for one or draft one. We apparently called the Jets about Wilson. We also talked to the Seahawks about Metcalf. Drafting our own guy was the best course of action given the required investment. Regardless now is the time for Bryce Young to produce. We are fourth amongst all teams in cap spending on the OL. Back to back first round picks at WR and multiple young TE draft picks now. Very solid and respectable backfield. New pieces across the defense. The time is now.
    • That was just the worst time to have their worst game of the season. One key deal was the broncos guess the Panthers would NOT change any plays or flow to the game. Another key point overlook that bronco defense was truly one of the best in the NFL history. It was the best defense the Panthers faced that year, by far. They were not ready for it, but broncos were ready for the Panthers. Mix in that bad luck, poor refs showcase, and this is the golden boys last game........ Panthers needed to win by 20 and the broncos defense was not going to allow that.  Panthers were the favorites and I believe they also thought that it was going to easier than them destroying NFC playoff teams as they marched to the SB. I've heard darin Gantt say the play calls were to give remmers help, but for some reason the team never did it. During the year they never had that problem, so maybe never practiced giving help via TE/RB, or WR chip. Cam was superman that year, no need for any adjustments...... Until you meet a legendary defense with studs at all levels, Think about it, Peyton was throwing wingless dunks for the whole season, the defense had to carry his corpse to the SB. That's how good they were, not many defense are able to get to the playoffs and win a SB without decent QB play. If you recall the beginning of that defense took Tim Teblows and his non-throwing arse to the playoffs couple years before. That's insane the level of defense needed to overcome.
