If our situation was different, I would take Stafford for sure. But his money for 2021 wouldn't mesh well with having Teddy OR cutting Teddy. Especially when he has struggled later in his career to stay healthy.

Stafford missed time his rookie and second year.  Then he played all 16 games for 8 straight years before getting hurt last year and missing half the season.  He's on track to play all 16 games this year.  How is that injury prone?

Those thinking swinging and missing for a QB doesn’t set you back are overlooking one minor detail: teams generally don’t give up on a high first round pick after one year, QB or not.  He almost has to suffer a career ending injury to not be around in year two.  He has to be atrocious to not be given a third year.  So if they swing, miss, and try again is a two or three year cycle, tick, tick, tick goes the window of opportunity for the rest of the roster.  Point is, it is NOT pain-free.

Clausen is a poor example because he was a second-round mistake (not a first rounder, wasn’t even the starter coming out of training camp, and happened to be fodder for World War 47, aka the painful end of the John Fox era).  In some ways he was a victim of circumstance, but he wasn’t very good by NFL standards, either.

I trust Rhule and company to evaluate whether those available when we pick, be it 4th or 7th (I doubt if it gets higher or lower than that).  Rhule has demonstrated good knowledge of college talent, and it is still fresh enough to be valid to this draft class, even if his evaluations have become more dependent on other people.

But, the idea that you really can’t reach in the search for a franchise QB overlooks a lot of high first round picks that were head scratchers, by teams desperate for a QB.  With as weak as our roster is in so many places, if they are not happy with who is available at the QB position when the time comes….move on.

They have a term for GMs who draft QBs in the first round, miss, try again a year or two later, miss again, rinse, and repeat:  unemployed.

Based on your own sample, there appears to be less chance than one might think he will become the driving force behind a SB win.

   It’s so adorable that people are still playing the “bridge” card, and even worse the “mentor” card to try and justify a horrible decision to pay a backup QB to get the team to it’s next actual starting QB. Remember this in March when the team can’t sign any decent OL or CBs or anything else they desperately need. 
 

    Here were the options and how much they would have saved. First Allen at 1M as a backup. So you’re heading into off-season looking for a “bridge”? Understandable. 
 

   Guarantee 34M-42M for a QB who hasn’t started a game in 4 years. Hope he becomes something he’s never been. Not hindsight, as many pointed this out when it was signed. 
 

 Sign Mariota to the same 1/9M(which is what he got) that the Raiders gave him. You think he goes to compete against a QB already signed to a big deal, or the chance that he could start if he can beat out Kyle Allen. Savings going into 2021 off-season....33M

  Winston at 3M or less. You brought in an OC whose main selling point was turning a late round QB into one of the best seasons in CFB history and #1 overall pick. If you’re going to take a chance on a QB taking a step to a place he hadn’t been, it doesn’t take 42M to find out. Savings....39M 

 Wait on Dalton who everyone knew was being cut after the draft. Because even the Bengals aren’t dumb enough to pay 17M(his salary if they didn’t) to have a calming “voice” in their QB room...lol. Savings.....39M. Not too mention, what if SD doesn’t take Herbert? Are you taking him, and paying his backup 42M, thus negating two years of the savings for a quality QB on a rookie deal? Before he even takes a snap? For a QB coach? Well done. 
 

  Sign Keenum for the 2/12M the Browns did. Gives you everything TB offered at a savings of 30M. 
 

  As it stands, the team has around 18M to start with. How many quality players are you signing with that. Plus draft picks? But because it was the Panthers that did this, people try excuse it’s ignorance and act like it seemed like a smart idea. You can probably pay to tag Moton with cutting KK. So that leaves 3 starting OL, and numerous other pieces, plus another 4.3M off dead cap in 2022. So just not signing TB, and cutting KK this year instead of next, could have given the team 45-55M more cap space to spend on the team’s future. Where would 70M in cap space put the team. In a year where many teams will have trouble fitting salaries in.  If anyone can spin that into being OK, I can’t wait to hear it. You got 3 wins, and a “mentor”(something he’s never done either). Gotta be pleased with that. Hilarious. Oh, and the 3rd round pick none of these other options wouldn’t have cost.

These articles and arguments confound me. If you miss (like Rosen) you aren’t stuck for a decade. The days of the Sam Bradford contract are gone. You can suck get a another high pick and take Murray.

As @MHS831 posted earlier, a franchise QB gets you long term playoff contention and the rest of the team determines how far you go. That’s where you want to be and it’s one draft pick not 10, so you are, get ready for this, you are allowed to draft a QB and more OL, DBs and LBs. There is no rule that you stop building the rest of the team after selecting a QB.

If we don’t like the top QBs and somehow lose out like Cincy trading out and 3 QBs go 1-2-3 then we don’t have to avoid Sewell if we don’t like QB4 more.

That said, there absolutely could be a chance we pick 3rd and the Jets take Sewell and stick with Darnold and we get whoever we want after Lawrence.

It’s OK to take a chance on a QB. Bears did with Trubisky and unfortunately for them they just selected the wrong one.

Teams win SB not singular players. Elway, Peyton and Luck all maxed out there roster on several occasions and all of them would get drafted number 1 all over again.

Stafford plays through injuries seemingly every season and he’s not as effective. He’s constantly banged up. 
 

I think he’s a really good qb though.
