If the Panthers land Stafford, it is win now, not rebuild

Our defence isn’t win now

I disagree. Brown and Chinn no longer rookies. Burns coming into his own.

The defense should be good enough to win with a couple more pieces added this offseason.

It's this kind of thinking that has kept us on a rollercoaster for our entire existence.  We as fans need to stop thinking this way.  You don't build a championship organization in a year or two.

Stafford is a great QB who I rate very highly.  But getting him may give us one or two good years, and then we'll suffer for three or four as we clean up the mess we made by bringing him here and trying to replace him.

Stop the madness.  Build the team through the draft, develop the players with the coaches and begin creating an organization that wins consistently.  We as fans need to stop seeking that instant gratification, because our mood can unfortunately influence the organization.

I'm not sure if anyone wins big here if our defense doesn't continue to improve. There were a lot of games we barely lost where the other team only had one or no punts -- and that is the sign of a bad defense. I think a lot of that was coaching timidity more than personnel and we got better in the last third of the season on defense (more aggressive) but ended up with Bridgewater pretty much falling off a cliff.

But while we are on the subject of getting a new QB, how would you feel about snagging Heinicke as a QB3 here if he was available? That kid has the "it" factor and he'd outshine what we ended 2020 with on the bench.

If the Panthers go out and get a QB the caliber of Matt Stafford they should absolutely be held to the "win now" standard and not the "rebuild" standard of 2020.

Given the level of success the 2020 season brought in terms of rookie defensive players coupled with a second year in the new system of Rhule, Brady, and Snow on top of a full offseason and preseason... well....

2021 had better not be a losing season.

At least 9-7 would be the expectation.

Agree?

If the Panthers are even confirmed to seriously pursue Stafford, let alone acquire him, it would make me question their commitment to "The Process" since it definitely seems like a move that would sacrifice the long term for the short term. No one can really argue that trading for a 32 year old qb, however durable, is a better long term move than drafting one, and "The Process" as elucidated by Rhule and Tepper, is definitely about making short term sacrifices for long term benefits.

Two players does not a defense make.  They are rebuilding whether they want to admit it or not.

You can still draft a qb to groom for future, who says you can’t trade for Stafford and draft one?

Probably the Lions, who would almost certainly expect pick 8 as bare minimum compensation. To be fair you could trade for Stafford and look to draft his replacement a few years down the road, but ask Aaron Rogers how franchise qb's feel about a team using high picks to draft their potential replacements towards the end of their career vs filling immediate needs in an effort to maximize their present qb's career potential.

Edit for additional thoughts: If we were able to acquire Stafford without giving up pick 8, I'd still say our priority with it would need to be acquiring a LT to protect him.

    • I think Indiana will win it all but Miami should give them a much better fight than Oregon did.
    • When I tell people I was at that game, they usually say oh that’s so cool you had the experience. I call it soul crushing. Why? The weeks and months leading up to it were great, the team was fun to watch every week…some weeks the offense was unstoppable and carried the team (saints and giants road games), other times the defense carried the load (jaguars, tampa). Lots of back and forth games against good teams (Seattle and Indy). Good young players on the team, but the veteran leadership was incredible…from Cam, Olsen, Kalil and J Stew to Luke, TD, Norman, Tillman, Jared Allen, CJ. Role players like Fozzy Whitaker, Cotchery (he caught that MFer), Philly brown, Kyle love, AJ Klein, and so on.  The Friday before the nfc championship my wife and I after a few drinks said let’s see what prices look like for flights/accommodations and we got to talking about how much prices would increase if we waited until we found out if we would be in the big game. We said screw it, we are only out $200 if we have to cancel.  Of course we come out and just pulverized the cardinals in front of the most raucous crowd by far we’ve ever had. We had no idea what we would do for game tickets and then found out a neighbor who worked for the team could get us 2 for face value (each employee got two of their own for free, something cool that JR did).  But then the NFL mafia decided that the storyline of manning going out on top like Elway would give them more goodwill than a non traditional QB who didn’t connect with their target demo and the rest is history. I never have and never will watch that game again. I am just hoping I can see them win one in the 2nd half of my life.
