This year's quarterback shuffle...

No one is going to take on 100 million from a broken QB. Stafford is probably the most sought after because his contract is manageable. Teams need to stop giving out ridiculously lucrative contracts to QBs who don't win.

This is actually good for the Panthers (and maybe the league)..

Despite what we do at the QB position, teams are now willing to turn that position over more regularly in order to find a top 5 guy.

What this hopefully means for the Panthers is that it resets the QB contract market causing it to drop slightly.

We used to talk about members of the hundred million dollar quarterback club having no Super Bowl victories. From what I know, they still don't have much to speak of.

Teams are spending ridiculous amounts of money on the quarterback spot and not getting an ideal return on investment.

This is a great point. Over the last 20 years, many have debated whether the Patriots success was Brady or Belichick. It’s looking like it may have been more Brady, but one thing teams and QBs have seemingly failed to learn is that massive contracts for QBs mean you have less money to spend in other areas. Brady often took a lesser contract to allow the Patriots to have more money to spend. That’s the way you build a dynasty, not by tying up 17-20% of your cap in one player.

Analysts have been talking about when "the quarterback bubble" is going to burst for a while now.

Truth be told, the success of Tampa probably helps grease the skids here.

Rational or not, people see the Bucs getting to the Super Bowl in year one with Brady and think 'we could do that".

yep

It’s the Mahomes effect too.

Teams are seeing the big gulf between his play (and Rodgers + Wilson) and their own QBs.

If a guy isn’t playing at that level, teams aren’t going to be satisfied.

Agreed. That's likely gonna lead to a lot of disappointment though. Quarterbacks like Mahomes, Rodgers and Brady don't exactly grow on trees.

it's kinda like deciding to dump your girlfriend because she isn't as hot as Margot Robbie.

Rapoport said Goff's contract makes him difficult to cut, but adds that it's "tradeable".

Same as Teddy. I think that is ultimately the problem with some of these contracts in general. They require a trade and then it becomes who would be willing to take these contracts for average or below average starters in a year the cap is going to drop.

Many of these potential moves aren't going to transpire for that reason.

So Schefter's estimation is that there will be no more than 13 teams who return their starting QB from last year...

Locks:

- Patrick Mahomes

- Josh Allen

- Russell Wilson

- Ryan Tannehill

- Lamar Jackson

- Kirk Cousins

- Kyler Murray

- Baker Mayfield

- Justin Herbert

- Joe Burrow

Near Locks:

- Ben Roethlisberger

- Tom Brady

- Aaron Rodgers

- Dak Prescott

Uncertain:

- Derek Carr

- Tua/Fitzpatrick

- Daniel Jones

- Deshaun Watson

- Jared Goff

- Jimmy Garappolo

- Cam Newton

- Trubisky/Foles

- Sam Darnold

- Drew Lock

- Teddy Bridgewater

- Matt Ryan

- Kyle Allen/Alex Smith/Taylor Heinicke

- Wentz/Hurts

Last year's starters that are 100% getting replaced:

- Drew Brees (retired)

- Phillip Rivers (retired)

- Matt Stafford (already stated he'll be traded)

- Gardner Minshew (Trevor Lawrence).

I really just can't see there being all that much turnover. I'm going to assume all the near-locks return as starters next year, which I think is a fair assumption. That is already 14 starters returning as starters for their same team this year... All the ones that are uncertain have varying levels of likelihood of them being replaced as starters next year, but I really can't imagine that even half of those change. There's only so many options to replace them (4ish in the draft, Stafford and maybe Watson). This is a real stretch from Schefter...

Yep, a lot of QB churn with no results.

I don’t see how any team can ‘out-offense’ the current chiefs roster.

The only viable strategy may be building a D that can stop them.

That would be one hell of a defense though. How do you out do what the 49ers had last year....

This is exactly why the focus should be on team building instead of shooting the moon. You don't want to get your guy and be a 0-16 quality team. Your rookie contract for your QB is a great initial Super Bowl window.

Derek Carr.  Now THERE'S a contract we could take on.  Carr has done nothing but get steadily better over the course of his career while playing in one of the most disfunctional franchises of the last 40 years.  There's a player in Carr.  Not sure I'd give up pick 8 for him, but I'd give our second rounder for a two year tryout on a guy who looks like he has all the tools.

Any chance GB would trade Jordan Love?

Based on how Rodgers played this year, he looks like he's got a solid 3-4 years easily left in the tank. He outplayed Brady in the NFCG and really looked like his time in GB is not as close to an end as last year.

If GB keeps reloading the missing pieces (which aren't many), their window looks like 3 years. Would Love sit for 3-4 years and GB burn 75% of that rookie deal that he's sitting on?

    • Former league executive and current NFL.com analyst Marc Ross recently named his top second-year breakout candidates for the upcoming campaign. Ross includes Legette, who may be helped out by his team's latest first-round selection. He writes: Legette had a slow start to his NFL career, catching 49 passes for 497 yards and four touchdowns last season. Some of the struggles can be tied to his own growing pains -- he had eight drops on 81 targets, according to Pro Football Focus -- but he had also had to navigate the quarterback shuffle between Bryce Young and Andy Dalton early in Dave Canales' first season leading the Panthers. Canales recently said he believes Carolina has a DK Metcalf-like talent in Legette, who had foot surgery this offseason but was cleared to resume work in early April, and that having a full offseason alongside Young, who took a significant step forward in 2024, could lead to a breakout result in 2025. I anticipate it will also help that Carolina invested another first-round pick in a wide receiver, Arizona's Tetairoa McMillan, to complement Legette in the pass game. McMillan's presence, however, could take some pressure off Legette—who may be able to roam around in a more natural playmaking role. With the 6-foot-4 All-American likely to take on the bulk of the volume from Young, Legette should have some cleaner shots to break out downfield and in the box score.     https://pantherswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/panthers/2025/05/06/panthers-wr-xaiver-legette-top-breakout-candidates-2025/83475176007/?taid=681a4610ede05d000149b376&utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_medium=trueanthem&utm_source=twitter
    • my understanding is a big time throw, could be a 5-10 yard slant to Adam Thielen given AT isn't going to separate.
