Panthers offered "More than a 1st" for Stafford

Well, I would absolutely never have offered the 7th pick for him, and that we did is horrifying...  But, the good news we can take from this is, if we were willing to offer that for Stafford, but the Lions didn't bite, then we will definitely put out one of the best offers for Watson...  and in that scenario, he decides where he wants to go, so we probably have a better chance.

But again, I must reiterate, the only guy on the roster I'm offering them is CMC.  No other young players, especially not DJ or Burns, period.

A few more details from a couple of sources...

In his latest MMQB, Albert Breer confirms that we did indeed offer the #8 pick...plus a later pick. Also says that ours was the highest draft pick offered (which makes sense because nobody above us was chasing him). Added that it was down to us or Washington before the Rams stepped up their offer.

Peter King added that although Stafford was open to going anywhere except New England, he did prefer Los Angeles or San Francisco. King also believes we may have been willing to add Bridgewater to the deal but isn't dead certain.

Who are your sources?

Anyone else concerned Brady and Rhule seem to fall in love with every qb? Career backup becomes a “must have” with a 63m contract when others offered prove It deals. 33 year old qb with back problems was going to be acquired for the 1.08? Does anyone in the building know how to handle the qb position???

The desperation in offering a horrible deal to Detroit (if we were on par with WFT) is revealing not only in what little faith we have in Teddy, but how much we don't like the QB options at the 8th pick. The run on QBs before we pick might just force our hand in trying to trade down, or selecting some other position. That would put us in line to possibly draft Mac Jones if he falls to the second round.

    • I agree. I’d make the move because I don’t see us sniffing the playoffs and let’s be honest TMac, Legette and Coker better be our top 3 future. If they aren’t and we need Thielen to replace one of them, then we need to draft yet another 1st round WR, SMH. Suffice it to say, Thielen isn’t good enough to get us into the playoffs so let’s get the young guys starting so we know if they aren’t good enough. We still have so many assumptions about whether players are who we need them to be that holding onto Thielen for 3-7 wins isn’t worth passing on a mid round pick (3rd to 5th/swaps). We’ve had some success with later round picks/UDFAs and need depth.
    • If you move Thielen I think you almost have to keep Renfrow. You need some sort of veteran presence in the locker room and Renfrow would be good insurance in the slot. I'm sure we have Coker penciled in to start there but you also have to be keeping Coker in the back of your head as XL insurance on the outside if he doesn't step up. If he flounders again, I wouldn't wait too awfully long to replace him with Coker outside and slide Renfrow into the slot and keep it moving.
    • Playing the same role is different than having the same style.  Cam Newton and Drew Brees both played QB but arent the same type in any way.
