Welp, Teddy can't start.

From Rapoport:

During trade talks to try to acquire Matthew Stafford, the Carolina Panthers made a serious offer to the Lions of their eighth overall pick, a fifth-round pick and quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, per league sources. Detroit opted to take the Rams offer. Carolina still looking.

This news pretty much conveys zero confidence in Teddy from the franchise. Once that is out there, it can't go back.

What did they think he could do when they signed him? 99% of us knew he was not the answer. I just don’t get it. We could have just sucked it up, trotted out Grier, lost almost every game, and cemented a top pick. Now we are stuck in no mans land.

Hopefully Teddy is not that dense that the news that he was involved in a trade for Stafford, a guy who's career and production massively dwarfs his own is some "shake me to my core" shocking revelation after everything else the organization has said and done this offseason. I mean if it does, oh boy, he has to be the most obtuse person on the planet. But I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt here. I don't think this news changes a thing. It also doesn't exclude the very real possibility of Teddy starting week 1, particularly if we draft a guy like Lance.

This. It's what I've been saying for awhile. None of this is Teddy's fault. Teddy was for us what he's always been. It's 100% on us for evidently expecting him to be something that he's not and that there was ample NFL evidence against him being.

    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
    • Sounds like Veesaar is entering the draft. He could always test the waters and pull out and return but without him our big men look like a serious liability. Better do something in the portal. If they don't do something about this portal madness my days as a college sports fan are probably numbered. This bullshit of having a nearly entirely new team every season is gonna get old fast.
