suddenly a terrible unit is starting to have life at the end of the tunnel

 

this team has gone places when they have stellar LT play (Gross was an All Pro) and Oher was in rare form during our SB run

Frankly, to be a guard, gotta have a little mean streak 

not sure Little has one of those.  As bad as those two interior guards were this past year, if he had ability, he would have been moved there

It depends on who you listen to, some say Slater doesnt have the measurables to be a OT and will have to bump inside to G or C. I'd rather trade back and get Christian Darrisaw

I won't complain about making our OLine better. We've needed one for almost 10 years now. Not always sexy but it pays offs.

IF we can't get "our guy" at QB, building the lines is obviously the best thing to do. I'd LOVE to finally have a Top 10 OL again.  

Doing so though, probably means we're stuck at QB and having this same conversation next year.  Realistically, a 2nd or 3rd round QB won't be our answer if we go that route. Can't trot Teddy out, so welcome aboard a bridge FA in the Fitzmagic role where our draft pick is middling again and we're trading up in the draft. Nuclear option, it's the year of Grier.  Let him play the Clausen role, suck it up, and we draft in the Top 5 in 2022 with a rebuilt OL and continually growing defense.  But, are we really going to openly regress and set the team back?  What message is that sending? 

Bottom line, half-assing the rebuild limited our options in so many ways baring a complete homerun of a draft this year.  Tepper/Hurney/Rhule/whoever screwed this team over by talking themselves into Teddy B to compete for 3rd place in the NFC South.  It's going to be a little chicken or egg scenario this year, where do we draft our QB and let him possibly get killed behind our OL, or do we build the OL and put the QB question off again.

Yeah. Little is just a flat bust. There is no way to get around that fact. He was less effective than Rashaan Gaulden.

There's no two ways to slice it, we're in a bad spot right now. We're probably on the outside looking in on the QB run at #8 while also needing to rebuild the OL. Trading to get our QB greatly impacts our ability to rebuild the OL. Using our capital to rebuild the OL basically means forgoing a QB or taking a shot in the dark at a 2nd or 3rd tier QB, be it a draft pick or a vet. We already went that vet route last year.

In the ideal world, Fields or Lance is available at #8. I'm just less and less convinced of that with each passing day with this current QB carousel going on. We have a gigantic target on our backs from teams behind us too because if one of those guys is available at #7 the Lions' phone is gonna be ringing off the hook with everyone and their brother knowing we are desperate for a QB.

I feel better about finding an OT in the 2nd than a QB, by most accounts it a a good tackle class.

Need to find a way to trade up without having to use this years second, maybe including a player instead of a pick. 
 

I like Brown a lot, and think he is going to become a great player, but last year did set up well for us to take a tackle in the first. 
 

I'm afraid when it is all over we are going to have to “make due” at the spot and maybe address it another time.

Fixing oline in off season.  If the QB of preference is gone at 8 we trade back.  Not too far 12-18 is prime.  Then draft Alex Leatherwood.  Bama beast.  Championship pedigree.  Outland trophy winning left tackle.  Second round target is Creed Humphrey Oklahoma center who has been in the middle of a innovative offense for years.  Top center.  If Creed gets swiped earlier than our second round pick (which is very likely) Go defense.  Later in draft we keep an eye on guys like Trey Smith, Robert Jones, Adrian Ealy, Jackson Carman etc.  Big swing tackles that could play a road grading right guard too.  In free agency I have three targets. 

1.  Pat Elflein - third rounder out Ohio State.  Started 44 games at all three interior positions.  So Jack of all trades but could start at Center or left guard.

2.  Brian Winters - third round out of Kent State.  Played on Jets for years poor guy.  But solid veteran to compete with a rookie right guard.

3. Sam Tevi - late round pick by chargers but despite that has started lots on the left side.  Gritty competitor with a chip on his shoulder.  Ideal to push Little and Leatherwood.  

If we miss out on Creed I would just wait yet another year for center.  Not a fan of many of the other centers.

I wasn't overly impressed with Leatherwood in the CFP. I think he's a good OT prospect, but I honestly think his late 1st to early 2nd draft grades from a month or so more accurately reflected where he should be drafted.
