My grandfather knew General Patton.  He said, "Nobody liked that SOB.  He salivated at the thought of war.  Few men are born like that--he was.  As much as you hate them, as much as you fear them, you need men like that when you are at war." 

I always equated Smitty to that description.

I knew two brothers who were with Patton the majority of his time during the war...they said similar things...when I could get them to talk.

Said he was the only person in that war who absolutely loved being there...said he was sad when he knew it was over.

One of my uncles served under Patton. I didn't know about it until I was in college.

Hated him. Said he was a glory hound.

Same uncle loved Omar Bradley though. Said Bradley used to smear mud over his stars so he wouldn't be distinguishable from the enlisted men.
