Possible cap casualties to target

Joe Person's latest Athletic article, Can Panthers find treasures among other teams’ salary cap-casualty trash?, touches on a few of the situations that some of us Huddlers have been looking at.

Some of the specific targets Person has listed:

  • TE: Zach Ertz, Cameron Brate, David Njoku, Jimmy Graham
  • WR: Jamison Crowder
  • OL: Charles Leno Jr, Kevin Zeitler, James Carpenter
  • DT: Jarran Reed, Akiem Hicks, Quinton Jefferson
  • CB: Malcolm Butler
  • LB: Jaylon Smith, Bendardrick McKinney

A few of us have buzzed about Njoku. He's a great athlete.

Not from Person's article, but a few other possible cap casualties:

  • OL: Andrew Norwell, Brandon Linder, Anthony Castonzo, Kevin Zeitler, Trai Turner, George Fant, Terron Armstead
  • TE: Evan Engram, Kyle Rudolph, Eric Ebron, Jesse James, CJ Uzomoah, Tyler Eifert, OJ Howard
  • LB: Dont'a Hightower, Jordan Hicks
  • CB: Kyle Fuller, Janoris Jenkins, Steven Nelson, Xavien Howard, Desmond Trufant, Justin Coleman, Bradley Roby, Robert Alford, Jonathan Jones, Buster Skrine

Id love to be able to grab Patrick Peterson.

Highly unlikely, but with his age, recent suspension for I believe PEDs, strong projected draft CB crop, and solid FA group.  He may not cost as much as people think around here.  But with our limited cap, it still may be to much for us.

Some of those names make no sense IMO. Ertz looks shot and I'd rather just pay and keep Samuel than go after Crowder.

Jaylon Smith is a crazy interesting name that I never considered, but it is a possibility based on his contract's structure. I don't see the Cowboys cutting him this season though as they stand to gain a lot more money if they just wait another year to see if he ascends.

Crowder, Ertz, and Graham I am super straight on tho. Would rather look for rising stars than fading lights.

Nice thread, Ice.  Thanks for getting this rolling---this year, there will be more cap casualties than any other prior year.  Gonna be fun.

Chief Njoku would be a nice addition--not yet 25 and he was a bit underutilized in Cleveland.  There is some interesting, bottom-of-the roster movement at TE on this roster so far, so I am not sure a big free agent is the plan--

We resigned Colin Thompson, signed that player from Seattle, and signed that backup QB from New Orleans (Stevens) who can play TE.  Not sure what we are doing there.

Not saying he can't play CB any longer, but he is obviously not as good as he once was. I wonder if he would consider playing FS. I think he could make the move successfully like Rod Woodson did years back

I remember being interested in Njoku in the draft a few years back, but haven't followed him. His stats aren't exactly earth shattering, and, IIRC, he was never much of a blocker. A change of scenery may help him out, but it's unlikely that he's the answer at TE. He is young, and should be cheap, so why the heck not? He's likely better than anyone we currently have.

    • excellent points and insights.  I agree on Tepper.  I guess I worry that his questions and comments might influence the thinking of his employees, that his presence in the room might add pressure to an already stressful situation, but after watching it again, it does not appear to be like that.  Morgan was in charge.  Canales mentioned needing a center, but beyond that, he was there to serve as a consultant, more or less, if asked.  I suppose my point was this--everyone knew their roles, I did not see egos--I saw empowerment.  As for Morgan--I saw a leader that listened to others, made wise decisions, and never lost control.  I was VERY IMPRESSED with Dan Morgan.
    • Pretty good summation, although I would caution just a bit that there might be a little of over-enhanced expectations. I do agree with the assessment on BPA. It was exceedingly clear they had a specific shopping list. Early on when there was some discussion about the tackles available, Morgan was asked if he was willing to give up a 5th to get Freeling, if it came to that. I think the only way it wasn't a left tackle with that 1st pick is if none that were valued as a 1st were still available.
    • a) That they made it a point in the room to point at the paper and say, "hope the camera got that" suggests we really did target the players we wanted and got them. While there is a ton of editing happening to cut out conversations not related to the players we picked, there didn't seem to be a lot of panic about who/what was going on b) Tepper appreciates the analytics. Now that he has a few years to see how the front office team works together to do the analysis, it still looks like he's hands-off (he's learned his lesson??). He seemed less vocal than in previous years' Blueprints (at least, in the edit).  I wouldn't expect Canales to be overly vocal in the draft room - he's likely already made his opinions known behind the scenes about certain players. Draft day is Morgan and Tilis and Eager's day. Loved seeing their interactions/conversations  c) that's all Eager. There's a great piece somewhere about the analytics engine he built floating around somewhere (maybe it was just after the draft?), and how he's constantly tweaking it with info about the players and input from the coaching staff.  That the post-draft press - for the most part - all seem to be overly positive about the draft actions we had compared to other teams makes it seem like we've gotten the ship moving in the right direction. Whether it translates to on-field results, well, that's a different topic for hundreds of other threads
