The Panthers have wasted little time rebuilding their offensive line, agreeing to terms with Cam Erving to presumably play left tackle and Pat Elflein to play right or left guard. Erving, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, got a two-year, $10 million deal with $8 million guaranteed. Elflein got a three-year, $13.5 million deal with six million guaranteed, according to Adam Schefter. With RT Taylor Moton getting the franchise tag the line is starting to take shape for whoever plays quarterback.

The contracts aren't necessarily bad but I don't see why you'd target depth offensive linemen on the first day of negotiations since you could end up getting them at a cheaper price if you just waited a little longer. They definitely seem to be going for versatility among the offensive line though, which is good to see.

Because we aren't the only team that needs OL depth, OL is one of the least talented position groups overall in the NFL. Just competent play, or below avg play will see a guy get signed.

Positional flexibility. Rhule praised it during his presser and its coming through now.

We've signed 2 players that combined have experience at all 5 positions on the oline for a combined 14 million gtd over the next 3 years.

These aren't splashes, these aren't Matt Kalil signings. These are low risk high reward contracts that offer positional flexibility along what has long been our least valued position imo.

Maybe these are the tier 2 guys that Rhule/Fitterer wanted. Why risk losing them to another team who's bargain bin shopping. I honestly had never heard of either guy an hour ago, so that's just a theory.

Perhaps they know they are going to have to give up this year’s first and second (and much more) to move up in the draft or to obtain a QB and they also know they need bodies in front of said QB

And maybe they think I these guys can wott try k well together and gave the versatility to move around due to  injury

who knows...this is year two of Rhule and year two of tepper’s grand vision

There are 56 other Guards and tackles currently making more than 5 million a season in 2021.

That number does not include the likes of Thuney, Rieff, Fischer etc that will all sign deals in excess of 5 mill per.

We arent paying a premium here. We're handing out backup level contracts for players that have starting experience and have had some level of success, even if limited, in the NFL.

All this in an effort to set us up for the draft to go BPA or package picks to move up for a QB.

    • i am anxious to see what he does with this new situation. i think the schedule is about as favorable as you could hope for the first half of the year. i don't expect a dramatic and quick  improvement, but i do expect improvement.
    • truthfully, when did he have time last year to throw it down field? plays took far too long to develop and the OL gave him no time.  i think we are basing far too much of bryce's assessment on a situation that didn't work out in his favor at all. it was probably the worst situation a rookie QB could have found himself in. the only i can think of who had it worse was David Carr, who had an even worse rookie season than Bryce by a significant margin statistically.  i think most would realize that carr was probably a better QB than his record would show, but he was shell shocked in his first few years because they did nothing to try to help him out. 3 of his 5 years in houston he led the league in sacks. i don't think he would ever have been an elite QB, but had he been in a better situation he probably would have had a better and longer career. point is, i don't think we saw everything that bryce is capable of because he was limited by the situation. but i understand the pessimism most have, because all we really have to go on was what we saw last year. that's why i wait to see what happens with a better situation. i just don't think you can give an accurate assessment of him based on last year. it wouldn't be fair for any rookie, tbh, but for one whos situation was so fugged up i think it's even more unfair. had nothing changed in the situation, you could probably expect more of the same. that's just not the case, though. a whole lot changed for the team and for his situation and i think for the better. it just makes sense that if we improved the situation that he will improve.
