I'm no fan of the Texans' ownership and I get why they're hated, but the OP's article lays out a pretty clear case that the team holds all the cards in this standoff.  Watson will be forced to play this season if he hopes to avoid taking an extremely significant financial hit.

So why would the Texans ruin Deshaun's reputation/future to play in the NFL, when all they have to do is wait for him to cave due to financial pressure or trade him for a boatload of picks/players?

Attacking Deshaun's reputation while he's under contract would likely destroy both of those options.  It would be like killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.

I suspect the owner didn’t like his reputation being attacked either

unrequited love, you know the ole ‘if I can’t have you no one can’

still, Watson doesn’t have the ‘encounters’ this doesn’t happen

Yeah, and the thing is, if these ARE true and the owner is involved, that also means he knew about this poo.

The Houston Chronicle's John McClain believes Deshaun Watson is "still destined to be traded."

Watson's legal issues could delay the timing of when he's traded, but signs still point to a deal being made. Teams will likely want to know the results of the NFL’s investigation into Watson and whether he'll be suspended under the personal conduct policy. McClain suggests it's possible Watson isn't moved until the trade deadline or before the 2022 draft. Houston was hoping to get three first-round picks for Watson but are going to have to lower their asking price. The Panthers, Eagles, Jets, Dolphins, 49ers, and Broncos have "remained interested" in trading for Watson

That makes sense. I wouldn’t stop looking into a trade unless he is charged with a crime, or suspended for an extensive period of time.

Its unlikely he will be charged with a crime, but with the NFL doing so much damage control on its image the last 8 or so seasons.. and the personal conduct policy its the part I made bold that is the issue. If he's traded someone will get him for pennies on the dollar.

Which would work to the benefit of the aforementioned teams. I would wager that each of them are waiting with baited breath and praying that criminal charges are never filed. Beside the optics of the whole situation this is an opportunity that they would not have expected. If one of these teams were to get him, then their biggest issue would be damage control in the way of public perception.

And honestly, they didn't present anything new in this article. We've all heard the same arguments here, but for the new situation and circumstances surrounding it, weeks ago! And at least in my mind, this new situation doesn't make him any more likely to want to be a Texan. The new reasoning--if you can call it that--is poppycock!

Didn't even read it, but that's not surprising at all. Used to get the globe every day here but it turned to complete crap a while ago and has been going even further downhill since. Never really read the sports section but I imagine it's not any different than the rest of the paper...

I wouldn't be surprised if the Texans actually trade him now because of his reputation.

Boston globe? Thats interesting, I bet they weren't in favor of consequences for Robert Kraft after his visit to Florida. Boston (New England) probably hoping teams like Carolina, Miami, Jets use their top 10 picks this year, then the Patriots can enter Watson trade talks on a more level negotiating field.

    • Next year this team will take a step back. Probably several steps back. It’ll be a bridge year as we develop our ELC players for a year or two. Let Rod develop them and then reevaluate. I think switching up who he has on the bench with him would do wonders.
    • Yeah if we lose this series, barring a tremendous comeback, Rod shouldnt be brought back. If Dundon wants to bring him back, it should only be for 1 more year that gives Rod a chance to change.  The complete 180 this team does come playoff time is frustrating to say the least. No matter who we add, the same goal scorers that have been with us for this playoff streak all go silent. The powerplay is non-existent, even after having the 2nd best this regular season. Our defense, which is one of the best in the league, suddenly keeps allowing many open chances. This is all on coaching. If Rod wants to stay, he is going to have to let go of his assistants. Chaining himself to them is holding him back, but if thats how he wants it, then so be it.
