I mean he is a 17 million cap hit this season.  That's decent boning.

...i misunderstood then...damn

Carolina will pay a portion of Bridgewater's 2021 compensation as part of a restructured contract to finalize the deal to Denver, which now has competition for Drew Lock, as well as options with the No. 9 pick.

Panthers trade Teddy Bridgewater to Denver

CHARLOTTE — Such that there were lingering questions, the Panthers answered them Wednesday.

The Panthers cleared the way for new quarterback Sam Darnold to work without any kind of cloud over his head or doubt about his status, trading incumbent starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to the Broncos for a 2021 sixth-round pick.

Dealing Bridgewater was likely inevitable once the Panthers traded three picks (including a second- and fourth-rounder next year) for the 23-year-old Darnold earlier this month.

Bridgewater, 28, started 15 games for the Panthers last year, missing one with a knee injury.

He threw for 3,733 yards in 2020, and his 69.1 completion percentage ranked fifth in the league among regular starters. But he had just 15 touchdowns on the season, and faltered late in some games.

Of course, blaming all of last year's offensive issues on Bridgewater would be disingenuous. He played in just three games with running back Christian McCaffrey, the last of which was a 33-31 loss at Kansas City which showed what the offense might have been.

Bridgewater was 5-0 as a starter in New Orleans in 2019, playing well in relief of Drew Brees. But that never translated the same way in Charlotte, leading them to cut bait a year into the three-year deal he signed last offseason.

He won the NFL's 2020 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, given annually to a player who best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition.

Now they have a more clearly defined depth chart, though they're still able to add to the position if the opportunity arises this weekend.

The Panthers also have backups P.J. Walker and Will Grier, along with versatile Tommy Stevens, a sometimes tight end.

And with the trade, the Panthers now have eight picks in the 2021 NFL Draft (eighth overall, 39th, 73rd, 113th, 151st, 191st, 193rd, 222nd).

This changes my opinion of drafting Fields or Lance.   When we had Teddy I felt that he would be a viable backup for Darnold.  If we move down I believe we will address the QB spot with or 2nd or 3rd pick.

Maybe, I still Think its possible we grab Fields if by some Miracle he is there at 8. He sits behind Darnold (we do not pick up the 5th yr option), but learns the offensive and prepares to start in 2022 (unless something happens to Darnold).

If Fields isn't there then I bet we do grab Mond or someone else in the middle rounds.

LOL Yikes.  OK - so thats not so great.  They just REALLY wanted him off this roster.  Not that I blame them, but damn - eating 17 mil in dead cap is not cash money.

He was going to be a $20+ mil roster spot anyways.  We're still saving $5.9 towards the cap.  The money was going to him either way; we apparently would rather pay him not to be here and save a tad extra.

    • I see Bryce's development this way: He improved when his supporting cast improved.  TMac and Dowdle saved his arse last year, but in fairness, most good QBs have good WRs and good RBs--and good OLs.   The 2025 OL underperformed, actually. They were above average, but they should have been elite if you consider the salary cap.   As soon as we signed Lewis and Hunt, I started thinking, "That's not sustainable.  With Ickey about to get paid a LT salary, Moton and Hunt grabbling $50m per season combined, and Lewis around $17m--that would be nearly $100m and the Center just walked.  Yikes.  What does that mean?  Rico walks, Mays walks, and we do not have a top 5 WR on a second contract.  We do not have an elite TE, and only 1 is on a modest second contract. And now Bryce will demand $50m for his incremental rise to mediocrity?   So when we sign Bryce, we will get weaker at other positions.  Hunt, Moton, maybe Ickey and Lewis, will all be casualties--that is the right move regardless (not sure yet about Ickey, but he was not elite) Bryce is one lucky, entitled camper.  No competition since being drafted, and he lost his job for a while to the aging clipboard holder.  Now we are bringing in UDFAs and busts to compete with him.
    • Probably not.  If we are taking a QB, it would be a prospect to replace Bryce and not a flyer type player.  I can't say for sure, but I doubt he would have cracked the top 3-4 QBs even if he were to play this coming season.
    • The Giants, Cardinals  and Dolphins should have moved on, but they didn't and ended up cutting their QB early into a monster second contract and had to eat a TON of dead cap money.
