It's too early tell but they "could" be right.  If Darnold is who he has been and Fields lights it up in Chicago, our team is going to look real bad.   

The bit about Samuel is goofy.  We couldn't pay him and Robby/Moore and we got a steal at WR in the draft.

Personally I'd rather have Darnold and Fields. That way if Darnold flops we have an immediate backup plan, and all it would have cost was passing on Horn. Sure Filed could be a bust as well, but I'd like to roll the dice on him.

If Horn and Fields both pan out to be very good players, then Fields is way more valuable than Horn obviously.

Fit and his scouting staff have seen something in Darnold that makes him clearly the better prospect over Fields. Rhule won't talk about Fields in a negative way to explain what makes Fields a less valuable prospect, but our scouts have seen something.

I think the 3 seasons of experience combined with how Sam was misused in NY attracted them into acquiring Sam.    

They believe they can have Sam come in, learn the playbook, and basically "hit the ground running" so to speak as the Starting QB without too much of a learning curve (ie. Young QB learning how faster the speed of the game in the NFL is)

Sam has a leg up on every rookie QB in every conceivable metric. Except learning the playbook.

 

Sam is in a great situation.

 

If he doesn't thrive? It's pretty much on him.

 

HOWEVER...on the flip side. If he does succeed. We are golden.

 

So...win-win

Exactly.  And Sam has to realize that this is it.  

He fails HERE, then he's done as a Starting QB in every team's eyes.

It is a lot like Jameis down in NO. If he does well, he is back in the game. If he fails, he is probably going to need help to get back to starting.

 

Just the nature of the beast. Do well, and you eat. Don't do well...well it ain't pretty.

Well I don't personally like Winston's chances.   He never really impressed me much.

Sam, on the other hand, has that "It" factor.

All he needs is a supporting cast(which he now has) to use it.

When Winston came out, he scared me. But every year that fear has subsided just a little bit more. Now? He still scares me, because you never know what you will get. 

 

Now Sam? He scares me as well. Had a roller coaster career at USC, but showed enough talent to get picked at #3. Had an up and down career at NY, but showed enough talent for us to give him a shot.

 

 

It's like Good Jake, we could compete with anybody. Bad Jake? Well, let's not go there.

      To say that, is gaslighting, because it isn’t true. I mean, maybe one or two people do that but it isn’t the predominant behavior. Even Frank has given him credit. I think particularly the Rams game. A couple of glowing posts.   I know I have. Gotta be honest about it because if you aren’t it undermines what else you say.  But the degree of how far I go with credit, in terms of it being a projection of future performance? Not very far. Acknowledge it, but require more of it. There is a lot of bad play to offset.    I tried to remain passive while the last 9 games (post ankle injury) played out. It is just really hard when the lows won’t go away. I failed. As high as a couple of those highs were, there isn’t enough.    I know it is premature to just say I want to move on, made my decision after 6 of those games ended up pretty much really good or not good enough, but I have had enough of being patient and letting him show the reality either way.  So in my view, he Could still validate himself to a decent degree if he smokes the last three starts. But also in my view I don’t expect to see it. Maybe one more high quality start, would be my expectation. So yes he could still somehow justify having the job next year. If that happened I still wouldn’t have much faith given the last three years and all that has transpired. Again, there is a lot of bad play to offset.
