The evolution to being a perennial winner.

My only expectation for last year was to show improvement, even if it didn't translate to wins. And we did, especially on defense with limited talent. Robbie Anderson another surprise, along with DJ Moore getting better. But we battled and we're in most games and we couldn't say that for years. I hope for a 8+ win year in that 9 to 10 wins will be my real expectation. But if we lose a few heartbreakers because a fumble or Tom Brady did a classic TB 1 minute drive to win it at the end, I won't be down on the team. Just show improvement and don't get blown out. I want to see the rookies and 2 year guys improve to the point our expectations are even higher in 2022.

I agree you build up the team, have a plan and a culture but notice that the teams you mentioned who have sustained success have franchise qbs.  We desperately need one. They passed on fields and took Jaycee.  time will tell if that was correct move. But overall I agree about not rushing and building the right way, not reaching and being methodical so I’m not upset or anything. I like the direction we’re heading overall.

Not taking Fields changed the trajectory of this Franchise. We’re now 5 years away from being a legit contender when we could have been 2 years away. We’re going to waste the next few years convincing ourselves Sam Darnold can get it done. He can’t.

If Sam Darnold proves to not be the answer in 2021 there will be another qb drafted anyway. I also wanted Fields but he is hardly the only possible answer in our future.

How does he know the FO people or the business side of stadium ops did good things right? He doesn't know if they're good people or not. Some parts of the operation needed to be fixed, he evaluated and then started making moves.

Yeah. I think it was being prudent rather than coming in saying “This is how it should work” immediately. Putting the foundation in place and executing to a strategy takes time and it is not always instant.

A friend of mine is a HUGE die-hard Jets fan. I asked him what he thought about the week 1 Jets/Car match-up.

His response: "Watch Darnold be a star"

Maybe. But we cut ties with Teddy after one season. Fields wasn’t the end all be all or were fuged. But we do desperately need to secure a franchise qb in the next couple of years.

Easier said than done. They are hard to come by. If two of the ones drafted this year become franchise guys that’s around the average. Hopefully Darnold will work out and we want have to do the QB shuffle. The good news if we have laid the foundation for a solid team overall. If we find ourselves continuing to search for a QB, whoever we bring in should have a solid team/foundation around them.

Always another draft….but this was a draft class loaded with QB prospects.   If there was a year your team had head to the draft for QB talent….this one had abnormally good prospects IMO.  They don’t all look like this.

Let us hope he is right. I don't care who our quarterback is as long as we are no longer the divisional doormat I'm tired of seeing our rivals get the best of us.

How many GMs out there have only produced 3 winning seasons in 13 years of employment?

A lot of GMs that perform poorly don't get as many seasons as Marty did.

Hell, if not for the Richardson scandal, Marty might still be in charge.

We hear that most years though don't we? The hype is always there. There was the too close to call dilemma of 2011. You just never know. Recent super bowl winning quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes and Russell Wilson have had a softening effect on some really ugly qb classes the last twenty years or so.

I think that’s the plan. If the staff looked at Fields as a question mark, pairing him with a defense that can’t get off the field on third downs isn’t doing him any favors. Hence the “Darnold + Horn > Fields” narrative. This staff knows that Darnold is a gamble, but not one that sets us back big time long term.

If Sam stinks it up, another year of draft/FA would greatly benefit a rookie. Who knows, after the season, maybe Watson will have his mess sorted out, or we draft a rookie.

I like the fact that this staff seems to be thinking long term, Making contingency plans, throwing a lot of things against the wall and moving on quickly from whatever doesn’t stick. In on every deal. I like it a lot.

Anyways. This is what I was trying to quote. Can you really not delete posts anymore? Editing sucks now.

    • While I hated keeping Rhule, I thought if he still kept sucking, it would be an easy path to number 1. Firing him 5 games into the season then winning meaningless games just made it worse. We weren't making a deep run even if we made the wildcard with a losing record. That whole season was pointless, but at least I was optimistic an owner with 1/4 of a brain couldn't muck it up. Ahhh Dave....
